GFPGAN (Generative Facial Prior GAN) is a practical algorithmic project launched by Tencent ARC Lab, aimed at solving real-world face restoration problems. Its core idea is to leverage the rich generative priors contained in pre-trained face GANs (e.g., StyleGAN2) to perform blind face restoration, that is, recovering high-quality faces from low-quality inputs without relying on specific degradation assumptions.
I. Main Capabilities
- Blind face restoration: It can handle face images with various degradations such as blur, noise, compression distortion, and low resolution, and output clearer results with richer details.
- Multiple model versions: It provides models such as V1.3 and V1.4. The V1.3 version produces more natural restoration results and performs better on extremely low-quality and high-quality inputs; compared with V1.3, the V1.4 version has a slight improvement in details and identity preservation. Note that V1.3 is not always better than V1.2, and the model should be selected according to the purpose and input.
- Background enhancement: It supports combining Real-ESRGAN to enhance non-face regions (background), thereby improving the overall image quality.
- Clean version without CUDA extensions: It provides a GFPGAN version that does not depend on custom CUDA extensions, lowering the installation threshold.
- Non-colorization model: It provides an updated model that does not perform colorization processing on faces.
- Online demos: It provides a Colab Demo (including another Colab Demo for the original paper model) and a Gradio Web demo on Hugging Face Spaces.
- Related ecosystem: The project also integrates RestoreFormer inference code and recommends related projects such as Real-ESRGAN (general image restoration), BasicSR (open-source image and video restoration toolbox), facexlib (a collection of face-related functions), and HandyView (a PyQt5-based image viewer).
II. Usage
- Environment dependencies: Requires Python >= 3.7 (Anaconda or Miniconda is recommended), with optional NVIDIA GPU + CUDA.
- Installation steps:
- Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/TencentARC/GFPGAN.git,然后cd GFPGAN.
- Install dependencies: pip install basicsr; pip install facexlib; pip install -r requirements.txt; python setup.py develop.
- If background enhancement is needed, additionally install: pip install realesrgan.
- Quick inference: Taking the V1.3 version as an example, you need to download the pre-trained model GFPGANv1.3.pth. If using the original paper model, refer to PaperModel.md for installation and inference. More models (such as the discriminator) can be obtained from Google Drive or Tencent Weiyun.
- Training: The project provides training code (for the paper), and users can improve it according to their needs. Training requires preparing the FFHQ dataset, downloading pre-trained models (StyleGAN2 model, FFHQ component locations, ArcFace model) and placing them in the experiments/pretrained_models folder, modifying the configuration file options/train_gfpgan_v1.yml, and then using the distributed launch command for training.
III. Applicable Scenarios
- Old photo restoration and low-quality face image enhancement.
- Face restoration in videos (can be processed frame by frame).
- As a research baseline for academic research related to face restoration.
- Integration into applications that require face enhancement functionality.
IV. Limitations
- The official materials do not mention charging models, prices, or specific commercial licensing details, and only state that it is released under the Apache License Version 2.0.
- No specific performance metrics or comparison data with other tools are provided.
- Use requires a certain technical background, involving environment configuration, model downloads, and command-line operations.
- The effects of different model versions differ and need to be selected according to the input, and the specific differences of models such as V1.4 are not explained in detail in the materials.
- Training requires high-quality datasets and preprocessing (such as makeup), and more high-quality faces can improve restoration quality.
