About this tool

Purpose

crypto-news-mcp is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server used to provide AI agents with real-time cryptocurrency news from NewsData.

Main Capabilities

The project provides the following tools and prompts:

  • Tool: Latest News Headlines (get_latest_news) — retrieves the latest cryptocurrency news headlines. Calling get_latest_news() returns a headline string with publication dates.
  • Tool: Crypto News Search (get_crypto_news) — searches news articles by cryptocurrency or keyword, and supports pagination using the nextPage API feature. Parameters include query (string, such as "bitcoin") and optional max_pages (integer, default 1). Returns a formatted string containing article titles, dates, and descriptions.
  • Prompt: News Summary (summarize_news) — generates a prompt for summarizing news for a specified cryptocurrency or topic. The parameter is query (string, such as "ethereum"), and the output is a prompt string for LLM processing.

Usage

Prerequisites: a Newsdata.io API key is required; Git is required if you need to clone the repository.

It can be installed to Claude Desktop via Smithery, or configured manually:

  • Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/kukapay/crypto-news-mcp.git and enter the directory cd crypto-news-mcp
  • Install dependencies: pip install mcp[cli] httpx python-dotenv
  • Install as a Claude Desktop plugin: mcp install main.py --name "CryptoNews"
  • Or manually configure an MCP-compatible client by adding "Crypto News" to mcpServers, with command as python, args as ["path/to/crypto-news-mcp/main.py"], and setting NEWS_API_KEY in env to your newsdata API key.

Applicable Scenarios
