About this tool

chainlist-mcp is an MCP protocol-based server designed to provide AI agents with quick access to verified EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) chain information. Its data comes from Chainlist.org and covers key information such as RPC URLs, chain IDs, block explorers, and native tokens.

Main Capabilities

  • Efficient Data Retrieval: Caches Chainlist API data to minimize repeated requests.
  • Flexible Search: getChainsByKeyword supports case-insensitive keyword matching, implemented using regular expressions.
  • Structured Output: Returns responses in Markdown format, presenting rpc and explorers in tables for easy reading.

Environment Requirements and Installation

Python 3.10 or higher is required before use, and using uv to manage Python projects and dependencies is recommended (it can be installed via pip install uv or by referring to the uv documentation).

Installation steps:

  1. Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/kukapay/chainlist-mcp.git
cd chainlist-mcp
  1. Install dependencies:
uv sync

Installing to Claude Desktop

This server can be installed as a Claude Desktop application:

uv run mcp install cli.py --name "Chainlist MCP"

A reference configuration file is as follows:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "Chainlist MCP": {
      "command": "uv",
      "args": [
        "--directory",
        "/path/to/chainlist-mcp",
        "run",
        "main.py"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Please replace /path/to/chainlist-mcp with the actual installation path.

Usage

This server exposes two tools through the MCP protocol, which can be accessed through MCP-compatible clients or MCP Inspector.

Tool 1: Get Chain Details

  • Description: Get detailed information about a blockchain based on its chain ID.
  • Parameter: chain_id (integer): the unique identifier of the blockchain (for example, 1 represents Ethereum Mainnet).
  • Returns: A Markdown string containing chain details or an error message.
  • Example prompt (in an MCP client):

Tool 2: Search Chains by Keyword

  • Description: Search blockchains by keyword (case-insensitive partial match).
  • Parameters:
    • keyword (string): the keyword or partial name to search for (for example, 'eth').
    • limit (integer, optional): the maximum number of results to return (default: 5).
  • Returns: A Markdown string listing up to limit matching chains or an error message.

Applicable Scenarios

Suitable for development and automation scenarios that require AI agents to quickly query basic EVM chain information, such as obtaining a specific chain's RPC address, explorer link, or native token information during a conversation.
