WP Foundry is a desktop application for managing WordPress sites, supporting Mac, Windows, and Linux systems. It is designed to help users centrally manage multiple WordPress sites in one desktop application, avoiding the need to frequently switch browser tabs to log in to each site's wp-admin backend.
Main capabilities include:
- Updating plugins, themes, and WordPress core: you can view items that need updating and push updates per site or in batches.
- Backups: before making changes, you can capture archive files of plugins or themes so you can roll back if an update causes problems.
- Security checks: quickly check for known plugin and theme vulnerabilities to help decide which components to update or remove.
- User and role management: add, edit, or delete users without entering each site's user interface.
- Queue and command log: time-consuming tasks enter a queue, allowing users to continue working; command history is saved locally for easy review of execution status.
Usage is divided into three steps:
- Install and activate the Foundry Helper plugin from WordPress.org on each site, and copy the shared key from its settings interface. The connection test in the application will confirm whether HTTPS access is working properly, with no need to use WP-CLI on the server.
- Paste the site URL and shared key in the WP Foundry application, and click connection test. Once passed, information such as plugins, themes, and users can be retrieved.
- Work in the desktop application, switch between saved sites via the sidebar, queue time-consuming tasks such as updates and backups, and open the command log when necessary to view details.
Regarding data storage, WP Foundry communicates with each site via HTTPS, and site URLs and shared keys are stored in the user's local database and are not synced to any cloud. The application is not a hosting control panel, nor a cloud SaaS service, but a locally installed tool that points to the user's existing sites.
Use cases:
- Freelancers and small agencies managing multiple client sites.
- Independent developers tired of a large number of wp-admin links in their bookmarks.
- Site owners who want to complete updates and backups without frequently logging in to the WordPress dashboard.
Limitations and notes:
- The free version supports up to two WordPress sites, and the Pro version supports unlimited sites.
- Free and Pro unlock the same features. The Pro version is a one-time 10-dollar license, no subscription, and data will not be locked into a cloud dashboard.
- Software updates are included for one year.
- No WP Foundry account is required.
