Overseerr MCP is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server built for Overseerr and its unified successor Seerr, with the goal of enabling AI assistants to search, request, and manage media directly through your Seer instance, with integration accomplished via the Model Context Protocol.
Purpose To provide AI assistants with a standardized capability to connect to Overseerr/Seerr, enabling them to perform everyday operations such as media discovery, request submission, request approval, and status queries using natural language.
Main Capabilities
- Performance optimization: The official text states that batch operations can reduce API calls by 99% (from 150-300 down to 1); the compact response format can reduce token consumption by 88%.
- Batch Dedupe Mode: A single operation can check 50-100 titles.
- Smart Caching: Can reduce API calls by 70-85%.
- Safety Features: Multi-season confirmation and input validation.
- Toolset: Provides 6 tools for searching, requesting, and managing media, and can discover Radarr/Sonarr server configurations.
- Automated security scanning: Dependabot updates dependencies weekly; CodeQL analyzes code vulnerabilities (PR + weekly); Trivy scans Docker images (CI only, blocking PRs if vulnerabilities are found); CI verifies everything during PR review, and CD trusts CI and releases.
- Hardened Docker image: non-root user (mcpuser), multi-stage build, minimal Alpine base image, dumb-init process management.
- Input validation: Validates URL and API key formats, and fails fast with clear error messages if validation fails.
Usage Prerequisites: Node.js 18.0 or higher; a Seerr or Overseerr instance (self-hosted or hosted); a Seerr/Overseerr API key (obtained in the instance's Settings → General).
Option 1: NPM (recommended) Configure Claude Desktop by adding the following to the configuration file: macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json The documentation states to configure the environment variables SEERR_URL (your Seerr/Overseerr instance URL) and SEERR_API_KEY (the API key from Settings → General).
Legacy Overseerr users: If you are still using Overseerr (rather than Seerr), you can continue to use the legacy variables OVERSEERR_URL and OVERSEERR_API_KEY. Both OVERSEERR_* and SEERR_* variables are supported for backward compatibility, and the legacy variables will be removed in v3.0.0.
Option 2: Docker (remote access) Docker Compose is supported. After testing the server, connect the MCP client:
- Transport: Streamable HTTP
- URL:http://localhost:8085/mcp
Method 3: Build from source.
Configuration Environment variables:
- SEERR_URL: the URL of your Seerr/Overseerr instance
- SEERR_API_KEY: the API key from Settings → General
- Legacy (deprecated, to be removed in v3.0.0): OVERSEERR_URL (use SEERR_URL instead), OVERSEERR_API_KEY (use SEERR_API_KEY instead) Optional variables: The official text does not list the specific optional variable names and default values; it only states "Optional (with defaults)", which are not provided here.
Usage examples Bulk deduplication workflow (suitable for anime seasons): check whether a large number of titles have already been requested at once. Media requests with validation: for example, requesting all seasons of content will trigger multi-season confirmation. Manage requests: view pending requests, approve requests, etc. Service discovery: query configured Radarr/Sonarr servers and their quality profiles. Natural language examples: you can directly say to the AI assistant—
- "Search for Inception in Seerr"
- "Check if these 50 anime titles have been requested"
- "Request Breaking Bad all seasons"
- "Show me all pending media requests"
- "Approve request ID 123"
- "Get details for TMDB ID 550"
- "What Radarr servers are configured?"
- "Show me the quality profiles for my Sonarr server"
Applicable scenarios Suitable for scenarios where you need to check, request, and manage media in Overseerr/Seerr in a bulk manner, and want to complete these operations in natural language through an AI assistant (such as MCP clients like Claude Desktop), especially suitable for workflows such as bulk deduplication of entire anime seasons, large-scale title checking, and request approval.
Limitations and notes Requires an existing Seerr or Overseerr instance and the corresponding API key; requires Node.js 18.0 or higher. The specific contents of the variables marked "optional (with defaults)" in the documentation are not provided for now. The legacy OVERSEERR_* variables will be removed in v3.0.0.
