Codachi is a productivity copilot disguised as a tamagotchi, living in the Claude Code status bar.
[Purpose] It provides Claude Code users with a virtual pet that resides permanently in the status bar, adding a sense of companionship while also serving as an auxiliary feature for context monitoring and productivity tracking.
[Main Capabilities]
- Context ETA: Predicts the remaining context time, for example showing "~15m left", telling users when to run /compact, rather than just showing how full the context is. It is officially described as the only statusline capable of predicting this information.
- Event-aware pet: Observes Claude's work through hooks and reacts with 900+ context-related messages covering 40+ event categories. Messages support file awareness (showing the actual filename being edited), time awareness (morning/night/weekend), and relationship awareness (different messages for strangers and close friends).
- codachi stats: A local, zero-telemetry productivity dashboard showing session count, runtime, relationship level progress, and the number of tests/commits/edits in the last 24 hours.
- Plugin API: Add custom colors and messages by placing .mjs files into ~/.config/codachi/plugins/, no fork required.
- i18n: Built-in Simplified Chinese, with missing keys falling back to English; bring your own locale via CODACHI_LOCALE.
- Terminal awareness: Automatically detects truecolor / 256-color / 16-color / monochrome and degrades gracefully; respects NO_COLOR.
- Zero overhead: No API calls, no token consumption, local JSON + disk storage, rendering p95 around 0.1ms (verified by npm run bench).
[Usage] Install and connect to the statusline and PostToolExecution hook in ~/.claude/settings.json with a single command. The pet will hatch after restarting Claude Code. Global installation is also supported: npm install -g codachi && codachi init. After installation there are also several useful commands (the documentation does not list the specific command names one by one). It can be configured through an interactive wizard, or by directly editing ~/.config/codachi/config.json. The widgets supported by the status bar (first line): model, context, velocity, rateLimit5h, rateLimit7d, which can be reordered or removed in the widgets array. Plugin message keys include: BUSY_MESSAGES, DANGER_MESSAGES, USAGE_HIGH_MESSAGES, VELOCITY_FAST, VELOCITY_SLOW, COMPACT_SUGGEST, IDLE_MESSAGES (by animal), SIZE_MESSAGES (by size), WELCOME_MESSAGES (by level), TIER_UPGRADE (by level), RARE_EVENTS, EVENT_MESSAGES (by category), FILE_TYPE_MESSAGES (by language), as well as GIT_CLEAN_MESSAGES / GIT_BUSY_MESSAGES / GIT_AHEAD_MESSAGES / GIT_BEHIND_MESSAGES / GIT_STASH_MESSAGES / GIT_WIP_MESSAGES. User override files go in ~/.config/codachi/locales/<locale>.json, with the same key pattern, allowing partial files (missing keys fall back to English).
[Pet Growth and Reactions] The pet grows larger as context usage increases. Each session is randomly assigned a species and color scheme (which can also be specified in the configuration). 5 species, 5 moods, 10 color schemes (Coral Flame, Electric Blue, Neon Mint, Purple Haze, Hot Pink, Golden Sun, Ice Violet, Cherry Blossom, Cyan Surge, Tangerine). The pet's mood reactions cover multiple event categories: tests (pass/fail), builds (pass/fail), package installation, Git (commit, push, pull, merge, rebase, stash, checkout), Lint/formatting, server startup, Docker/K8s, network/HTTP, dangerous commands, search/grep, editing files by type (tests, docs, styles, config, code), creating new files, quick edits, code exploration, recovering from errorsrecovery, struggle mode (3+ failures), session milestones, level-ups, smart /compact suggestions, etc. The pet remembers you across sessions and raises your relationship level; level-ups trigger a one-time celebration. When context exceeds 70% and consumption is fast, the pet gently suggests /compact once, without nagging repeatedly.
[Use cases] Suitable for developers who use Claude Code and want to keep track of context consumption pacing in real time and compact promptly; also suitable for users who enjoy a sense of companionship, event feedback, and lightweight productivity stats in a coding environment.
[Limitations] Debug logs are located at ~/.claude/plugins/codachi/codachi.log (automatic rotation at 256KB). Data is stored in ~/.claude/plugins/codachi/. Other more detailed limitation information was not provided. Information such as pricing and billing methods is not yet available.
