Phonable is a smart voicemail app for iPhone, designed to replace traditional carrier voicemail. The traditional voicemail experience has not changed in decades: the caller leaves a message after the prompt, and the user often cannot be bothered to dial in and listen. Phonable tries to take care of both ends of the call: the caller gets immediate feedback, and the user gets a quickly scannable summary of the voice message.
Purpose
When users cannot answer calls because they are in a meeting, driving, working out at the gym, out for the weekend, in Airplane Mode, have a dead phone battery, or have no signal, Phonable takes over these missed calls and keeps callers from being left waiting and guessing.
Main capabilities
- Automatic reply text message: At the moment a call is missed, Phonable sends a short text message on the user's behalf to tell the other party why the call could not be answered and when to expect a reply. Even if the other party hangs up without leaving a message, the text message is still sent.
- Voice message transcription and AI summary: If there is a message, the recording, full transcription text, and a one-line AI summary appear in the app, and the summary is also delivered in advance as a notification.
- Visual voicemail: No need to dial in and press 1; all voice messages are shown in a list, and users can skim the transcription or play the recording at a chosen speed, with one-tap callback or messaging.
- Greeting customization: Users can record their own greeting, or enter text and choose a natural AI voice (with voices such as Sarah, George, Laura, Lily, Brian, and Charlie, plus American, British, and Australian accents and different tones) to read it aloud.
- Modes: Pair greetings with reply text messages. Preset modes such as Workday, Driving, Gym, and Weekend can be switched with one tap, or set to stay on for one hour, three hours, or until the next morning, or switch automatically by day and time period.
- Call timeline: Incoming calls and voice messages are merged and displayed by name in a single timeline, with caller names taken from Contacts.
- Privacy by design: Contacts remain local on the iPhone and are not uploaded; the official statement says user data will not be sold.
- Separate line: Users can upgrade to get a dedicated Phonable line that handles incoming calls only.
- Light and dark mode: The interface follows the iPhone's light/dark mode.
How to use it
Phonable uses a standard feature of the carrier's mobile network - conditional call forwarding. After registration, the app guides users through a three-step setup (about one minute) to enable call forwarding. After that, calls the user answers normally are unaffected; only when the call is not answered or the line is busy,When you decline a call or cannot be reached (Airplane Mode, dead battery, no signal), incoming calls are forwarded to a Phonable line. Users can turn off call forwarding at any time in the app, and missed calls will return to the carrier voicemail. Users keep their existing number, SIM card, and phone.
Use Cases
Moments when you cannot answer the phone, such as work, meetings, driving, working out, or weekend outings. Each mode comes with its own greeting and reply SMS, for example "Sorry I missed your call, I'm in a meeting and will reply within an hour," "I'm driving and will reply as soon as I park," "At the gym, can't take calls! Will call back within an hour," "Out for the weekend, back Monday, please email for urgent matters," and so on.
Limitations and Notes
- Reply SMS messages use the SMS allowance in your plan and will not be sent to landlines or countries/regions that are not yet supported.
- To keep things friendly, the same caller receives at most one SMS per hour.
- A free Test Drive is available to try it out; Basic and Pro offer more voicemail and SMS allowances, more modes, and modes that switch automatically on a schedule, and Pro also includes AI voice greetings and a dedicated line. Prices are shown in the App Store in local currency, annual payment saves 20%, and you can cancel at any time in App Store settings.
- Greetings can be recorded yourself or read aloud with an AI voice, with no need for a real-person recording.
- Details such as the complete list of supported countries/regions, specific allowance amounts, and the languages supported by AI summaries are not yet provided in the materials.
