About this tool

yfinance-mcp is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides AI assistants with the ability to access Yahoo Finance data through yfinance. Users can query stock information, financial news, sector rankings, and generate professional financial charts in AI chats.

Main capabilities:

  • Stock data: company information, financial data, valuation metrics, dividends, and trading data.
  • Analyst data: consensus target prices, estimate/revision trends, recommendation history, and institutional-level actions.
  • Financial statements: historical data from income statements and balance sheets (EBIT, invested capital, etc.).
  • Financial news: recent news articles and press releases for any stock ticker.
  • Search: find stocks, ETFs, and news in Yahoo Finance.
  • Sector rankings: view top ETFs, mutual funds, companies, growth leaders, and top performers by sector.
  • Price history: historical OHLCV data, returned as a markdown table or professional chart.
  • Chart generation: candlestick charts, VWAP, and volume profile charts, returned as WebP images.
  • Options data: options chains, including calls, puts, strike prices, implied volatility, and expiration dates.
  • Holdings data: major holders, institutional investors, mutual fund holders, and insider transactions.
  • Fund look-through: ETF and mutual fund holdings, asset classes, sectors, ratings, and operational details.
  • Screeners: predefined, stock, mutual fund, and ETF query trees.

Usage: Install via uv (recommended), and add the relevant configuration to the MCP client configuration. Alternatively, clone the repository and install dependencies, replacing /path/to/yfinance-mcp with the actual clone path. When testing with Codex CLI, the repository includes .codex/config.toml, and uses uv run yfmcp to register the local yfmcp MCP server. After cloning the repository and running uv sync, open Codex CLI from the repository root to try prompts.

Use cases: suitable for users who need to directly obtain and analyze Yahoo Finance financial data from AI chats, such as investors, analysts, or financial researchers.

Limitations: the project uses the MIT license. Specific feature details and availability may vary depending on the data source and yfinance version. Other limitations are not provided for now.
