About this tool

VineVerse MCP is an MCP server that presents the Bible as a knowledge graph, and this repository, vineverse-mcp, is its stdio bridge.

Purpose

This package is designed specifically for MCP clients that can only launch local processes, enabling them to connect to the hosted VineVerse MCP server. If the client supports streamable HTTP, this package is not needed, and it can point directly to the hosted endpoint. This bridge does nothing other than pass JSON-RPC messages between the local process and the hosted server.

Main capabilities

The VineVerse server represents the Bible as a knowledge graph, covering verses, people, places, themes, and Hebrew morphemes, and provides verse search, interlinear queries, cross-references, and genealogy queries. The bridge forwards the server's full functionality as-is to stdio clients, adding and filtering no tools.

Usage

Node 20 or higher is required before use. This package has no dependencies.

It can be run via npm, or using Docker. The repository provides useful commands for a local site checkout. The tests launch the bridge as a real subprocess rather than importing the module, because two of the checks (notifications produce no reply, and the process exit code is 0 with responses not truncated) are process properties rather than function properties. The tests drive initialize, notifications/initialized, and tools/list through real stdio, then call get_passage to fetch John 3:16. The tests connect to the live endpoint, so a failure may mean there is a problem with the bridge or the hosted server. CI runs on every push and runs weekly on a schedule against Node 20 and 24. The scheduled runs are intentional: because the tests connect to the live endpoint, even if the repository has not changed for months, a green badge still means the server can respond that day.

The build script exists because hosted builders (such as Glama) unconditionally run install and then build. It is not a no-op; instead it runs node --check, which is the only meaningful build step for a dependency-free single file.

Applicable scenarios

Suitable for MCP clients that only support launching local processes and need to access the VineVerse Bible knowledge graph.scenarios.

Limitations

This package is only a stdio bridge and provides no additional functionality beyond message passing. The repository's MIT license covers only the bridge, not the corpus. The corpus's sources and their licenses are listed at vineverse.bible/attribution. The server has 17 tools, consistent with the hosted server, and this package neither adds nor removes any. The server declares one resource, vineverse://support, marked audience: ["user"], used to inform who operates it, the costs, and where the surplus goes, and it is forwarded as-is. VineVerse is free, requires no key, has no ads, and is operated on donations; get_support and vineverse://support are used to provide users with the donation link vineverse.bible/support. Information such as pricing, specific donation amounts, and server performance details is not currently provided in the materials.
