About this tool

Coincap MCP is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for accessing the CoinCap public API, developed by QuantGeekDev and open-sourced on GitHub. It allows users to query cryptocurrency information and can be used without an API key or registration.

Purpose: This server is designed to enable AI assistants (such as Claude Desktop) to obtain real-time cryptocurrency data provided by CoinCap through natural language. Users can ask clients configured with this server questions such as "What is the price of bitcoin?", "What are the available crypto assets?", or "What is the market cap of ethereum?".

Main capabilities:

  • Get the price of a specific cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, which is an example of a simple basic API call tool.
  • Get the price of any available cryptocurrency on the CoinCap API, demonstrating how to obtain required parameter data for tool calls.
  • Get a list of all available crypto assets in the CoinCap API.

Usage: Users need to add the configuration to the Claude Desktop configuration file. The paths to the configuration file are:

  • MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json After that, start Claude Desktop to begin using it. In addition, Coincap can also be automatically installed for Claude Desktop via Smithery.

Development and local build: When building locally, the configuration also needs to be added to the above configuration file. The specific steps include: installing dependencies and building the server. For development mode, auto-rebuild is also supported. However, the official documentation does not provide the specific installation commands and execution code.

Applicable scenarios: Suitable for users who need to quickly query cryptocurrency prices, market caps, and available asset lists in AI conversations, especially those using MCP-supporting clients such as Claude Desktop.

Limitations: This project is based on the CoinCap public API, so data accuracy and availability depend on CoinCap's service. The official documentation does not provide the specific installation commands, dependency list, or code content of the build script, nor does it state whether other clients or platforms are supported.
