MacGPT is a ChatGPT client app designed specifically for macOS, aiming to make it more convenient for users to use ChatGPT on a Mac. It mainly offers three ways to use it: global functionality, Inline functionality, and menu bar access.
Global functionality: Users can use ChatGPT anywhere through the global functionality. Once activated, a text box pops up in the center of the screen, and users can start chatting with ChatGPT directly.
Inline functionality: MacGPT Inline brings ChatGPT directly into text fields. Users only need to enter a trigger phrase and prompt, and ChatGPT will do the rest. However, this feature may not work properly in some apps, such as Sublime Text, Notion, WhatsApp, etc., and the developer is looking for a solution.
Menu bar access: Users can quickly access ChatGPT through the menu bar, either via the website method or using the native API method. Accessing the ChatGPT website through the website method requires no additional payment.
Other features: Supports copying clear and readable ChatGPT conversation records; provides a conversation mode, allowing users to communicate with ChatGPT by voice without a keyboard.
How to use: Users can log in directly to their ChatGPT account and access GPT Plus features. For a better and faster experience, you can use the ChatGPT API, which requires obtaining your own OpenAI API key and linking a credit card. Currently, the GPT-4 API is only available through the API and requires joining a waitlist first.
Use cases: Suitable for users who need to use ChatGPT frequently on a Mac, especially in scenarios where they want quick invocation, direct use in text input, or voice interaction.
Limitations: MacGPT only supports macOS Monterey and Ventura because it uses some of the latest APIs. MacGPT connects directly to OpenAI servers, so it cannot control OpenAI's restrictions on proxy servers. The Inline feature is unavailable in some apps. The GPT-4 API requires a waitlist.
In addition, MacGPT also has an iPhone version called GeePeeTee, which is available for free.
