About this tool

ShyEditor is an AI writing studio for novelists. Its official positioning is not to connect a chatbot to a text editor, but rather to be an environment built specifically for writing, letting AI, your knowledge base, and your manuscript work together. The official claim is that more than 20,000 writers already use it.

Purpose

  • Complete the planning, drafting, and revision of a novel in one place, with built-in editorial feedback and manuscript formatting.
  • Cover the process from idea to finished book, while also being usable for papers, articles, and research writing.

Main capabilities Planning and outlining: Starting from a premise, Story Engine can draft a synopsis and a chapter-by-chapter plan, and you can keep the parts you are satisfied with and regenerate the rest. Existing drafts can be imported directly, and the knowledge base is built automatically. Writing assistance: Write in a clean, distraction-free editor, and when you get stuck, press Tab and ShyEditor will suggest the next sentence in your style; suggestions take the whole story into account, not just the previous sentence; you can continue a scene or rewrite awkward sentences; the grammar checker can recognize that character names you invented are not spelling errors; word count goals and a writing streak help maintain momentum. Knowledge base: Store every character, place, and event so details are not lost as the length grows; drafts can be imported to build it automatically. Editorial feedback (Beta): You can have AI comment on just one chapter, or submit the entire book to receive a complete editorial letter covering everything from plot logic to writing style, with direct quotations from your original text; it points out what is already working well; it ranks issues by severity and provides a step-by-step revision plan. Formatting and export: Choose the format and the chapters to include, then export; one-click presets are provided for novel, APA, MLA, and more, and font, line spacing, and layout are all configurable; the market viability report includes comparable titles and a one-page synopsis for use in query letters. Sharing: Any chapter can be shared via a direct link, and readers can read it without an account, making it suitable for beta readers. Project Q&A: You can have AI check the timeline, track characters across chapters, find plot holes, or help work out what happens next; the official examples show that it can find conflicts such as "Chapter 3 has a festival on a new moon night, but Chapter 7 says 'two days later' it is a full moon," as well as issues such as the word "suddenly" appearing 347 times throughout the book and a character not being entered in the knowledge base, and it provides evidence. Other: Version history (a snapshot is saved for each chapter, which can be browsed and restored), drag-and-drop chapter reordering, light and dark themes, and more.

How to use

  • Web app; writing content is stored locally on the device, so you can keep writing offline, and it syncs automatically once you are back online; AI features require an internet connection.
  • When creating a project, you can import DOCX, TXT, or Markdown; novel projects can also read importedEnter text and fill characters, locations, and events into the knowledge base.
  • Share in read-only mode and send chapter links.
  • The free plan lets you finish an entire novel; Pro provides more AI credits, full-book review, export to DOCX and PDF, and more.

Use cases

  • Novels, novellas, and serials, using the same set of planning tools.
  • Academic writing: six citation formats, reference management, structured paper drafts.
  • Research: a conversational PDF library, source lookup by DOI, in-depth research reports.
  • Nonfiction writing such as theses and articles.

Limitations and notes

  • AI is a tool, not a ghostwriter; the author decides what AI handles and what is kept.
  • The official statement says your writing will not be used to train its models or any other models, and its AI providers are not permitted to train on it; style analysis is private to the account only and affects only your own suggestions.
  • Credits are consumed only for AI: one rewrite, one accepted autocomplete, one question, or one chapter critique costs 1 credit; larger tasks are more expensive, such as a full-book review at 50 credits. Writing, grammar checking, and automatic AI suggestions do not consume credits. Sign-up grants 100 credits, free accounts refresh with 20 credits per month, and Pro gives 500 credits per month.
  • A native mobile app has not yet been released.
  • The official page does not provide specific pricing information, and none is available for now.
