About this tool

Purpose

whale-tracker-mcp is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implemented in Python that integrates the Whale Alert API for real-time tracking and analysis of cryptocurrency whale (large) transactions. It is aimed at cryptocurrency enthusiasts, developers, and analysts, helping to monitor whale activity directly within LLM-driven workflows (such as Claude Desktop).

Main Capabilities

The server exposes the following capabilities to MCP-compatible clients:

  • Tools:
    • get_recent_transactions: Retrieves recent whale transactions, with optional filtering by blockchain, minimum amount, and maximum count.
    • get_transaction_details: Queries detailed information about a transaction by transaction ID.
  • Resources:
    • whale://transactions/{blockchain}: Exposes recent transactions of the specified blockchain as context data.
  • Prompts:
    • query_whale_activity: A reusable template for analyzing whale transaction patterns, filterable by blockchain.
  • Other features: Uses httpx for asynchronous, non-blocking API calls; securely configures the API Key via a .env file.

Usage

Environment Requirements

  • Python version 3.10 or higher.
  • Whale Alert API Key: Register at whale-alert.io to obtain one.
  • MCP client: A client compatible with Claude Desktop or MCP Inspector, etc.

Installation and Running

  1. Clone the repository:
    git clone <仓库地址>

  2. Install dependencies (uv is recommended, pip can also be used): (Specific commands are not provided yet)
  3. Configure the API Key: Create a .env file in the project root directory and add the Whale Alert API Key:
    WHALE_ALERT_API_KEY=<你的 key>

  4. Automatically install to Claude Desktop via Smithery: (Specific commands are not provided yet)
  5. Test the server locally using MCP Inspector: (Specific commands are not provided yet) After opening the Web interface, you can browse the server's tools, resources, and prompts.
  6. Integrate into Claude Desktop:
    mcp install <命令>

Here --name "WhaleTracker" can set a custom name for the server, and -f .env loads the API Key from the .env file. After installation, restart Claude Desktop; if a hammer icon appears in the input box, it indicates successful loading.
  7. Run standalone (custom deployment): (Specific commands are not provided yet) Or use the MCP CLI.

Interaction Examples

In Claude Desktop, you can try the following commands:

  • "Show me recent whale transactions on Bitcoin." (The server will call get_recent_transactions with blockchain="bitcoin")
  • "Get details for transaction ID 123456789." (The server uses get_transaction_details to retrieve and display transaction data)
  • "Analyze whale activity on Ethereum." (The query_whale_activity prompt will trigger analysis based on the whale://transactions/ethereum resource)

The API Key can also be passed directly when running the server (the specific method is not provided yet).

Applicable Scenarios

  • Track whale transfers on blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum in real time within MCP clients such as Claude Desktop.
  • Filter large transactions by minimum amount to quickly identify market movements worth attention.
  • Query detailed information for a specific transaction ID.
  • Combine prompt templates to analyze whale activity on a certain blockchain.

Limitations

  • A Whale Alert API Key is required to use it; API availability and quota depend on the Whale Alert service.
  • Depends on Python 3.10+ and an MCP-compatible client.
  • The specific dependency installation commands, Smithery installation commands, MCP Inspector testing commands, and standalone running commands are not fully provided in the materials.
  • The project uses the MIT license; see the LICENSE file for details.
