Purpose
mcp-server is the official cryptocurrency yield data MCP server from Bitcompare, built on the Model Context Protocol, enabling MCP-compatible agents such as Claude to directly access real-time and historical crypto lending, savings, staking, borrowing, stablecoin, price, coin metadata, and market data.
Key capabilities
Provides 18 read-only tools, all subject to the same subscription plan limits as the REST API:
- Crypto yield data: current and historical lending, borrowing, savings, and staking APY from CeFi and DeFi providers.
- Coin data: metadata, markets, history, similar coins, and queries ranked by market cap.
- Prices: aggregated exchange prices, with median and outlier filtering.
- Global market statistics: total market cap, dominance, Fear and Greed Index, and 24-hour gainers and losers.
- Stablecoin data: peg deviation leaderboards, historical drift, and yield comparisons.
- Symbol resolution: maps exchange-specific tickers (BTC, XBT, wBTC) to canonical coin IDs. For the full tool catalog, see https://www.bitcompare.net/mcp ; for the machine-readable version, see https://api.bitcompare.net/mcp/tools.json ; for the agent manifest, see https://api.bitcompare.net/llms.txt .
Usage
No installation required; it can be run via npx:
npx @bitcompare/mcp-server
Configuring Claude Desktop: edit claude_desktop_config.json (on macOS the path is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json), add the corresponding server configuration, and restart Claude Desktop. You can then ask "what's the best yield on BTC right now?" and Claude will call get_rates and answer based on real-time data.
Configuring Claude Code: configure accordingly in the project's .claude/settings.local.json.
Hosted alternative: if you don't want to install anything, you can also use the hosted MCP server via Streamable HTTP https://api.bitcompare.net/mcp , pointing to that URL in your MCP client and including the Authorization: Bearer ck_live_* request header.
Containers: containers for hosted introspection are provided (such as Glama), which install the published npm package and run the server via stdio.
tools/list introspection requires no key; tool calls require a valid ck_live_ Pro key.
Command-line options:
- --test — validate the key and list available tools, then exit
- --version — print the version
- --help — print help
- --base-url <url> — override the API base URL (for pre-release/development)
Use cases
Suitable for users who need to query crypto yields, coin information, market prices, stablecoin status, and other data within conversational agents, especially those already on a Bitcompare Pro or Enterprise plan who want to access real-time data directly in MCP clients such as Claude.
Limitations
Requires a Bitcompare Pro or Enterprise plan, and a ck_live_* key obtained at https://pro.bitcompare.net/dashboard/keys . The tools are read-only and subject to plan limits. The server is developed in the Bitcompare services monorepo and published to npm as @bitcompare/mcp-server; this repository mirrors the published package and its container for public discovery and hosted introspection.
