MCP-Backup-Server

MCP-Backup-Server is a server implementation based on the Model Context Protocol that provides file backup and restore capabilities for AI agents and code editing tools. It can create instant backups with contextual information before editing, supports file and folder operations, pattern filtering, version management, and secure restoration, and has been tested in the Cursor and Windsurf editors. This tool is positioned as a quick "save point" rather than a replacement for version control systems such as Git, and is suitable for use before refactoring, deleting folders, or making critical changes, preserving the agent's thought process and intent.

About this tool

MCP-Backup-Server is an MCP server designed specifically for AI agents and code editing tools, used to provide file backup and restore functionality. This project has been tested in the Cursor and Windsurf editors.

Purpose

This server is designed to address scenario requirements different from Git: it creates instant, targeted backups and preserves agent context and reasoning information. It is simpler than Git and suitable for safeguarding a single operation, usable without commit messages or branches, and without repository initialization, making it suitable for emergency "save points" before AI agents make critical changes.

Main capabilities

  • Preserve agent context and reasoning
  • Create targeted and minimized backups
  • Support file and folder operations
  • Maintain version history
  • Provide restoration safety
  • Use pattern filtering
  • Track operations
  • Allow cancellation

How to use

Install via Smithery: it can automatically install Backup Server for Claude Desktop.

Manual installation: the following environment variables need to be configured:

  • BACKUP_DIR: backup directory (default ./.code_backups)
  • EMERGENCY_BACKUP_DIR: emergency backup directory (default ./.code_emergency_backups)
  • MAX_VERSIONS: version count limit (default 10)

Editor configuration:

  • Windsurf MCP configuration: configure according to the corresponding format.
  • Cursor: create .cursor/mcp.json and use a similar configuration.

Supported tool operations include:

  • File operations: backup_create (create a backup with context), backup_list (list available backups), backup_restore (restore with a safety backup)
  • Folder operations: backup_folder_create (backup with pattern filtering), backup_folder_list (list folder backups), backup_folder_restore (restore folder structure), backup_list_all (list all backups)
  • mcp_cancel: cancel an operation

Applicable scenarios

Create backups only when truly needed:

  • Before refactoring: when changing important code
  • Before deleting folders: when reorganizing project structure
  • Multiple related changes: when updating multiple related files
  • RestoreSignificant work: when continuing important changes
  • Before restoring: create a safety backup before restoring

Backups should be kept minimized and purposeful, and the reason for each backup should be recorded.

Limitations

This tool is not suitable for long-term version tracking, has limited collaboration features, has no merge or conflict resolution, has no distributed backup capability, and does not replace a proper version control system. It stores complete file copies rather than diffs. For proper version history, collaboration, and project management, Git should be used.
