Purpose
finlight-mcp provides AI agents with real-time financial news data access. It connects Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any other MCP client to finlight—a financial news API covering global markets, geopolitics, and company-level news, with sentiment analysis and entity tagging.
Key capabilities
Once connected, you can ask your AI assistant questions such as:
- "What's the latest news on NVDA? Summarize the sentiment."
- "What headlines from the past two hours could move the market?"
- "Compare how different sources are covering the Fed decision."
- "Find recent articles about semiconductor export restrictions and list the companies mentioned."
- "What sources does finlight cover news on the Chinese market from?"
Article data includes:
- Sentiment scores with confidence levels
- Company entity tagging with stock tickers, ISINs, and exchange listing information
- Metadata such as source, language, country, and publication time
finlight aggregates and enriches news from carefully curated, finance-relevant sources (including major wire services, financial publishers, and regional sources in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic), with canonical English entity tagging. The MCP server uses the same data as the REST and WebSocket APIs.
Usage
Requires a finlight API key; sign up at app.finlight.me. The free tier is enough to try all tools.
- Remote endpoint:https://mcp.finlight.me(remote,streamable HTTP)
- Authentication: OAuth 2.0 (you'll be prompted for your finlight API key during connection)
- Registry: me.finlight/news
Claude (web / desktop): Go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, enter https://mcp.finlight.me,完成 OAuth flow: you'll be asked to paste your finlight API key once.
Cursor: Add to MCP settings (.cursor/mcp.json; the exact configuration content was not provided as complete code).
ChatGPT (developer mode / connectors): Add https://mcp.finlight.me as a remote MCP server, and complete the OAuth flow with your API key.
Stdio / local usage: For MCP clients that only support stdio transport (or if you prefer to start a local process), use the npm wrapper to bridge stdio to the remote server via mcp-remote; add it to any client configuration that accepts command + args. The OAuth flow is the same—a browser window opens on first use to enter the API key. For browserless environments (headless or CI), setting FINLIGHT_API_KEY skips OAuth and authenticates directly.
The server supports two authentication methods:
- OAuth 2.0 (default): dynamic client registration with PKCE. A browser window opens to enter your finlight API key. Works out of the box with any MCP client that supports OAuth.
- API key via request header: Setting the FINLIGHT_API_KEY environment variable skips the browser flow, and the key is sent directly as a Bearer token.
Use cases
Suitable for scenarios that require connecting real-time financial news, sentiment scores, and company entity information to AI assistants, such as market movement tracking, headline monitoring, cross-source coverage comparison, and news retrieval for specific industries or companies.
Limitations
MCP requests count toward your API quota. For free-tier limits and paid tiers' real-time access, higher rate limits, and additional features, see official pricing. Questions and feature requests for the MCP server can be submitted on GitHub; for API-related questions, use Discord or the support channels above.
