linear-mcp-server

linear-mcp-server is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Linear API, used to connect Linear's project management and issue tracking system to MCP, enabling LLMs to interact with Linear issues. This project is maintained by jerhadf and is currently marked as deprecated and no longer maintained; it is recommended to switch to the official Linear remote MCP server (https://mcp.linear.app/sse)。它支持自动安装(经 Smithery for Claude Desktop) and manual installation. Manual installation requires creating or obtaining a Linear API key and adding the server configuration to the Claude Desktop configuration file. Functionally, it provides tools such as creating issues, updating issues, searching issues, getting user issues, and adding comments, as well as resources such as linear-issue, linear-team, linear-user, linear-organization, and linear-viewer. The project uses the MIT license.

About this tool

Purpose

linear-mcp-server is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for interfacing with the Linear API. It integrates Linear's issue tracking system through MCP, enabling LLMs to interact with Linear issues.

Important note: this MCP server is now deprecated and no longer maintained. The author recommends switching to the official Linear remote MCP server (https://mcp.linear.app/sse)。

Main capabilities

This server provides the following tools:

  • linear_create_issue: Create a new Linear issue. Required inputs: title (string, issue title), teamId (string, ID of the team creating the issue); optional inputs: description (string, issue description, supports markdown), priority (number, 0-4, 1=urgent, 4=low), status (string, initial status name).

  • linear-user:///{userId}/assigned: View issues assigned to a userissues
  • linear-organization:: View organization information
  • linear-viewer:: View the current user context

Usage

Automatic installation: Automatically install the Linear MCP server for Claude Desktop via Smithery.

Manual installation:

  1. Create or obtain a Linear API key for your team:https://linear.app/YOUR-TEAM/settings/api
  2. Add the server configuration to Claude Desktop:
    • MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Development and build-related commands (based on the materials):

  • Install dependencies
  • Configure the Linear API key in .env
  • Build the server
  • Develop with automatic rebuilds

Use cases

The materials provide some example prompts that can be used with Claude Desktop:

  • "Show me all my high-priority issues" → run the search_issues tool and/or linear-user:///{userId}/assigned to find issues assigned to you with priority 1
  • "Based on what I've told you about this bug already, make a bug report for the authentication system" → use create_issue to create a new high-priority issue with appropriate details and status tracking
  • "Find all in progress frontend tasks" → use search_issues to locate frontend-related issues that are in progress
  • "Give me a summary of recent updates on the issues for mobile app development" → use search_issues to find relevant issues, then use linear-issue:///{issueId} to get issue details and show recent activity and comments
  • "What's the current workload for the mobile team?" → combine linear-team:///{teamId}/issues with search_issues to analyze the distribution and priority of the mobile team's issues

Limitations

This MCP server has been deprecated and is no longer maintained; the author recommends using the official Linear remote MCP server. The project uses the MIT license, allowing free use, modification, and distribution under the terms and conditions of the MIT license. Apart from the above, facts regarding fees, pricing, platform scope, actual results, etc. have not yet been provided.
