About this tool

mtg-oracle is an MCP server for Magic: The Gathering. According to the project description, it provides AI assistants with 14 tools for answering questions about Magic: The Gathering cards, game rules, combos, synergies, and the metagame, all implemented through the Model Context Protocol.

Main capabilities

  • Card search
  • Rules lookup
  • Deck analysis
  • Commander intelligence

Data and implementation approach The project explicitly states that it is not just another Scryfall wrapper. mtg-oracle downloads card data, the complete rules, and a combo database into a local SQLite database, enabling fast offline queries; at the same time, it has built-in curated Magic: The Gathering knowledge, including archetypes, format primers, Commander strategy, and mana base guidelines, with the goal of making large language models truly competent at Magic: The Gathering-related question answering.

How to use

  • It can be run directly with npx.
  • It supports configuration for Claude Desktop: on macOS, the configuration file is located at ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json, and the corresponding configuration can be added there.
  • If it is already installed globally, there is also a corresponding configuration method.
  • It supports Claude Code configuration. On first run, mtg-oracle downloads card data from Scryfall and rules data from Academy Ruins. The data is stored in the ~/.mtg-oracle/ directory and is automatically updated on subsequent runs. The npm package does not include any card data.
