Purpose
experimental-ext-skills is the repository for the official Model Context Protocol (MCP) Skills extension, with the extension identifier io.modelcontextprotocol/skills, based on the SEP-2640 proposal and maintained by the Skills Over MCP Working Group. Its core purpose is to enable skill discovery and distribution through MCP primitives.
Main Capabilities
This repository hosts the official Skills extension and its working group's working documents. The stable specification exists as published snapshots and is not edited in place; changes are proposed as dated entries in the decision log, and once accepted enter the draft revision of the specification and are released as a new version.
Usage
For the rationale for providing skills through MCP, see the official overview and the Motivation section of SEP-2640. For how to participate, see CONTRIBUTING.md. Public work includes Pull requests and issues; proposals, decisions, implementations, and other in-progress contributions are welcome.
Repository Content and Documentation Structure
The docs/ folder contains the decision log, design rationale, and implementation checklist. Early design documents, findings, and tracking records are frozen in docs/archive/, and none of this content is part of the specification.
Working Group Information
The working group charter is at modelcontextprotocol.io/community/working-groups/skills-over-mcp, including mission, scope, membership, active work items, and success criteria. There is also a project board (Skills Over MCP WG), meeting notes, the Discord channel #skills-over-mcp-wg, and the working group discussion channel.
Applicable Scenarios
It is suitable for developers, specification contributors, and implementers who wish to understand, participate in, or implement the MCP Skills extension, for example in scenarios involving skill discovery and distribution through MCP primitives.
Limitations
The repository materials do not provide specific installation commands, code examples, or fee or pricing information; this content is not currently provided.
