Bluf is an AI-powered browser extension whose name BLUF stands for Bottom Line Up Front. It is designed to be the user's AI reading companion, quickly summarizing and explaining content from any website, PDF document, or YouTube video, helping users get the most important information and avoid redundancy.
Purpose The core purpose of Bluf is to improve browsing and comprehension efficiency. Whether reading long news articles or emails, or learning new knowledge and analyzing academic papers, it can extract key points or turn complex concepts into easy-to-understand explanations.
Main Capabilities
- Summarize anything: quickly get the main points of any content and save valuable time.
- Expand knowledge: turn complex concepts into easy-to-read explanations, breaking down complex documents and technical terminology into simple, easy-to-understand descriptions.
- Comprehensive integration: supports websites, PDFs, YouTube videos, and local files.
- Shortcut access: use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Alt + B for instant access.
- Follow-up questions: after getting a summary or explanation, you can ask follow-up questions about specific points to explore further.
- Summary and explanation modes: choose according to the use case. When reading long news articles or emails, use the summary option to get the key points; when learning new knowledge, use the explanation option to generate simple, easy-to-understand descriptions.
- Precise search: refine searches to get only the information you need, letting the AI handle the heavy lifting and provide precise answers.
How to Use
- Navigate to the content: find the website, PDF, or YouTube video you need to summarize.
- Activate the extension: right-click the text, click the toolbar icon, or press Shift + Alt + B.
- Get the key points: click the summary or explanation button to get the core information.
- Ask follow-up questions: explore the content further by asking follow-up questions. Supported browsers: currently available on Chrome and Firefox, with other browsers coming soon.
Use Cases
- Forum moderators: identify key points to facilitate meaningful discussions and enhance community engagement.
- Students: quickly grasp the basic concepts in complex academic papers for thorough analysis; understand the key concepts in complex academic texts and improve learning and research efficiency.
- Social media managers: extract key ideas to create engaging posts and simplify content promotion.
- Busy professionals: summarize emails, reports, or news articles to stay informed in a timely manner and manage time efficiently.
Limitations and Notes
- Browser support: currently only Chrome and Firefox are supported.
- Prompts: A prompt is any message sent to BLUF, and can be a text-based prompt or any summary or explanation request. Multiple questions can be asked in one message and count as only one prompt. If BLUF fails to complete the request, it does not count as a prompt.
- Word/page limits: "words/page" refers to the maximum number of words that can be processed in a single page or document. If the page is too large, you can select a portion of the page and right-click to have BLUF focus on that smaller portion.
- Using prompts instead of dedicated buttons is not recommended: although you can use prompts to ask for a summary or explanation of a page, and it may work on some smaller pages, it is not recommended. The dedicated summary and explanation buttons are optimized for handling large content, while the prompt system is not. For best results, use the dedicated buttons.
- Data collection: BLUF collects usage data, but does not collect the content of prompts or answers. However, to complete prompts, BLUF sends the prompt content to OpenAI, and OpenAI retains the data for no more than 30 days.
- Contact: if you have questions, comments, or concerns, you can send an email to support@bluf.ai.
