About this tool

ffmpeg-mcp is an MCP server implemented using the ffmpeg command line, designed to conveniently perform operations such as searching, clipping, concatenating, playing, cropping, overlaying, and merging local videos through conversation.

Main capabilities: This server implements the following tools:

  • find_video_path: parameters are directory and filename; the filename can be a full name or without extension; recursively searches in the directory and returns the full path.
  • get_video_info: parameter is the video path; returns video information such as duration, frame rate, codec, width, and height.
  • clip_video: parameters are file path, start time, end time, or duration; returns the path of the clipped file.
  • concat_videos: parameters are a file list and output path; if the video elements in the file list (such as width, height, frame rate, etc.) are consistent, fast mode synthesis is automatically used.
  • play_video: uses ffplay to play video/audio, supporting multiple formats such as mov, mp4, avi, mkv, and 3gp; parameters include video_path (video path), speed (playback rate), and loop (number of plays).
  • overlay_video: overlays two videos. Parameters include background_video (background video path), overlay_video (foreground video path), output_path (output video path), position (relative position), dx (x offset), and dy (y offset).
  • scale_video: video scaling. Parameters include video_path (input video path), width (output video width; -2 keeps the aspect ratio), height (output video height; -2 keeps the aspect ratio), and output_path (output video path).
  • extract_frames_from_video: extracts images from a video. Parameters include video_path (video path), fps (extract one frame every specified number of seconds; set to 0 to extract all frames, set to 1 to extract one frame per second), output_folder (image save directory), format (format of extracted images: 0 for PNG, 1 for JPG, 2 for WEBP), and total_frames (maximum number of frames to extract; set to 0 for no limit).

Usage: Users need to download the project and configure it in Cline. Note:The value /Users/XXX/Downloads/ffmpeg in args needs to be replaced with the actual downloaded ffmpeg-mcp directory.

Applicable scenarios: Suitable for users who need to search, clip, concatenate, play, overlay, scale, and extract frames from local videos through conversation, especially developers or video processing personnel using the macOS platform.

Limitations: Currently only the macOS platform is supported, including ARM64 or x86_64 architecture. Support information for other platforms is not yet provided.
