Purpose
BIRME is a free online batch image processing tool for users who need to quickly process multiple images without wanting to install software or upload private files. It runs in the browser and lets you batch resize, crop, rename, watermark, add borders, convert formats, and export within a single workspace.
Main capabilities
- Batch resizing: set width, height, or both, with support for automatically locking the aspect ratio.
- Smart cropping: automatic focus detection preserves the important parts of the image; it also supports manually drawing the crop area for each image.
- Format support: input and output support JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF.
- Watermarks and borders: add text or image watermarks and adjust position, size, and opacity; add colored borders.
- Batch renaming: supports custom patterns and sequence numbering, for example ORIGINAL-NAME_800x800 or product-xxx.
- AI background removal: use an in-browser AI model to remove the background, and export as a transparent PNG or WebP, or fill with a solid color.
- AI super-resolution: upscale images by 2x, 3x, or 4x.
- Export methods: save to a folder, download individually, or package as a ZIP.
- High-quality scaling engine (pica), with settings automatically saved and restored on the next visit.
How to use
Drag JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF images into BIRME, choose the width, height, cropping behavior, output format, and quality, then download the processed images all at once. You can preserve the original aspect ratio, crop every image to exactly the same dimensions, or adjust the crop area for each image before exporting. For repetitive workflows, BIRME can batch rename by pattern and add borders or watermarks in the same batch job.
Use cases
Suitable for preparing e-commerce product images, creating website thumbnails, resizing blog images, standardizing the dimensions of a client gallery, compressing images before sending by email, and creating consistent square or rectangular social media assets.
Privacy and local processing
BIRME processes images locally in the browser, so files do not need to be uploaded to a server, making it suitable for handling private photos, commercial assets, product drafts, and other files you do not want to send to third-party services. AI background removal and AI super-resolution also run in the browser, with the relevant models downloaded on demand and cached by the browser.
Limitations and notes
- AI features take longer than ordinary resizing, so before processing in large batches it is recommended to test one or two images first to confirm the results and processing time.
- Super-resolution works best when the original image is relatively clear; blurry, extremely smallOr highly compressed original images may still have visible limitations.
- Background removal works best on images where the subject is clear and clearly distinguished from the background; the first use or the need to download a model may take longer than subsequent tasks.
- Shrinking an image usually keeps it clear; enlarging beyond the original size may cause pixelation.
- For most web uses, JPG or WebP quality of about 80% is a good balance between image quality and file size; above 90% is usually only needed for specific high-quality requirements.
Background
BIRME originated from a common website problem: clients need to upload images at consistent sizes, but most existing tools either distort photos, produce poor image quality, or require installing software. The first version was released in 2012 as a simple browser-based batch cropping and resizing tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do images need to be uploaded? No, everything is done in the browser with JavaScript, and images never leave your computer.
- Which formats are supported? Common web image formats are supported, and output can be in the original format, JPG, WebP, or AVIF, with adjustable quality.
- Can I download them as a package? Yes, use the "Download zip" button to export all processed images; in browsers that support folder access, they can also be saved directly to a folder.
- Can background removal be done in batches? Yes, after enabling background removal, choose a transparent background or a fill color and apply it to a single image or the entire batch; transparent export works best as PNG or WebP.
- Is background removal uploaded? No, background removal, like resizing and cropping, runs locally in the browser.
- How is AI super-resolution used? It appears in BIRME as AI Enhance; select a 2x, 3x, or 4x magnification factor, and processing each image takes a few seconds.
- Can they be combined? Yes, you can resize or crop, remove the background, AI enhance, rename, choose the output format, and export the entire batch in the same workflow.
- Renaming rules? Include the "x" character in the naming pattern, and BIRME will replace it with a sequence number, for example my-pet-xxx will generate my-pet-001.jpg, etc.; the special keyword ORIGINAL-NAME preserves the original file name, and you can also set the starting number.
- How does smart cropping work? Automatic focus detection uses a JavaScript library called "smartcrop" to identify areas containing more detail (lines, curves, and visual complexity) as the "interesting" parts that should be kept.
