Purpose Agent402 is the application layer of "Agentic Finance": it enables software agents to discover services on their own, pay per request with a wallet (x402, MPP protocols), obtain verifiable receipts, and earn revenue per request. It offers pay-per-use tools, metered models, and finished reports to AI agents, while also providing card-paid reports and monitoring services for human users, and a gateway for websites to charge crawlers.
Main capabilities
- 500+ tool catalog: with real-time web search and cited answers as the MCP front door, plus out-of-the-box web tools and multi-tool skill packs. It covers browser rendering, web search, PDF, image, OCR, real-time financial/crypto/macro data, SEC EDGAR, deterministic statistics, forecasting, option/bond pricing (Black-Scholes, YTM), compression, and 150+ CPU-only tools.
- LLM gateway (/v1): chat, embeddings, reranking, images, speech, and finished reports, with streaming support, passthrough of tool/function calling, optional prompt caching, upstream failover chains, and a free GET /v1/models model list.
- Finished reports: a single paid call returns a complete cited JSON report (including a source appendix), generated from first-party data the server fetches itself (EDGAR filings, openFDA, DNS/TLS probing, on-chain reads, real-time web search); ipo-report is fully deterministic (no model used). Reports support wallet payment only (x402/MPP/prepaid credits), and generation takes several minutes.
- x402 index: includes Find (/api/find), Route (POST /api/route, a neutral Smart Order Router, ranked by settled on-chain volume, health-aware, can include=external), and Leaderboard (GET /api/leaderboard, a public on-chain ranking by Base USDC settled volume).
- Decide: POST /api/decide turns a natural-language task into a callable plan (tools, order, fallbacks, schema-compliant inputs, cost and latency estimates), priced by depth; the decision fee is refunded as a 24-hour credit for /api/decide/execute to execute the plan, external steps are resold at the seller's price plus a disclosed 5% markup, with a budget cap, sequential fallback, and no successful step means nocharge.
- Skill packs: 70+ (the page says 80+) multi-tool workflows, as ordered, typed tool-call sequences with Claude-ready prompt templates, callable via MCP prompts or HTTP (GET /api/skill-packs/{slug}/prompt), with the index at /api/skill-packs.json.
- agent402-tollbooth: an open-source pay-per-crawl gateway that puts a 402 gate in front of your own website and charges crawlers.
How to use
- 30-second trial: claude mcp add agent402 -- npx -y agent402-mcp, or add the https://agent402.tools/mcp Paste into any MCP client. The free tier requires no wallet.
- Zero install: add the hosted connector in claude.ai → Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
- One command: run the MCP server locally (pure CPU tools require no key; the system pays a small proof of work on your behalf).
- Clone and self-host: run all 500+ tools as an HTTP API + MCP in free mode.
- One-click deploy to Railway: start from the repo's railway.toml + Dockerfile; optional Redis (REDIS_URL, enables upstream response caching, X-Cache: hit|miss) and Postgres (DATABASE_URL, enables the /api/analytics dashboard) plugins; free mode requires no environment variables.
- Payment methods: paid routes return 402 and carry both x402 and MPP challenges; no API key, no registration, wallet as account. For MPP use the mppx client (USDC.e or PathUSD on Tempo, or USDC on Base/Celo); for x402 use @x402/fetch (USDC on Base and other chains). Already-issued prepaid credit keys also work (Authorization: Bearer a402_…), and are no longer sold.
- Framework adapters: plug-and-play tools for mainstream agent stacks, with automatic payment under the hood.
- Verified installation instructions cover Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Cline, Roo Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, Continue, ElizaOS, and AgentCore, see agent402.tools/guides/agent-hosts (short link agent402.sh/<host>).
Use cases
- Agents need to call tools such as web search, OCR, browser rendering, financial data, statistics, and pricing on demand at runtime, paying per call.
- Need a finished report with citations in a single call (company profile, 13F fund report, insider flows, market brief, deep research, FDA recalls, domain audit).
- Want to find, among multiple x402 sellers, by price and healthand route to the most suitable tool.
- Want to charge per call on a self-hosted free instance, or charge crawlers on your own website.
- Human users buy reports by card ($2 to $5, depending on depth) and monitoring ($5/month, rerun on change).
Limitations and notes
- The catalog is based on per-call pricing and on-chain settlement; CI maintains a catalog floor of 400 entries and verifies the "500+" claim.
- Report generation takes a few minutes and supports wallet payment only (no proof of work).
- The card payment page is mounted only after the operator configures STRIPE_SECRET_KEY; MPP card payment (Stripe stripe/charge) is offered when the route price is at least $0.50 and the operator has configured it.
- Route labels such as routerDispatchEligible indicate dispatch eligibility; routable only means crawl-ready, not a payment commitment; for Base or Solana sellers with no history, attempts are made only after all verified candidates are exhausted, with a small per-call cap and marked as unverified on the receipt.
- Card prices include payment processing fees; agents paying per call pay the lower tool price for the same report.
- The operator is Havok Holdings LLC.
