About this tool

mongo-mcp is an open-source MongoDB MCP server by QuantGeekDev on GitHub, with the full name "MongoDB MCP Server for LLMS". It is based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling large language models (LLMs) to interact directly with MongoDB databases, completing tasks such as querying collections, inspecting schemas, and managing data through natural language.

Main capabilities include: Collection schema inspection, Document querying and filtering, Index management, and document operations (insert, update, delete).

In terms of usage, you first need to find your own MongoDB connection URL, and then add the corresponding configuration to the Claude Desktop configuration file. The configuration file locations are: MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json; Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json. It can also be automatically installed into Claude Desktop via Smithery. Prerequisites include Docker and Docker Compose (only for local sandbox testing) as well as an MCP client (for example, the Claude Desktop App).

If the user does not have a MongoDB server to connect to, they can create an example sandbox according to the documentation: use Docker Compose to start MongoDB, populate the database with test data, and then configure Claude Desktop. The seed script creates three collections containing example data: user personal information (name, email, age, nested address and coordinates, interests array, membership date); product details (name, SKU, category, nested specifications, price and inventory information, tags and ratings); order details (order items, user reference, shipping and payment information, status tracking).

The available tools provided by the server include: find (document querying with filtering and projection), listCollections (list available collections), insertOne (insert a single document), updateOne (update a single document), deleteOne (delete a single document), createIndex (create a new index), dropIndex (remove an index), indexes (list the indexes of a collection). The documentation gives example prompt directions for basic operations, advanced queries, index management, and document operations, but the specific prompt content is not yet provided.
