code-insights

code-insights is a tool that turns AI coding sessions into knowledge. It analyzes session records from Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Copilot CLI, and VS Code Copilot Chat, extracting structured insights, including decisions with trade-offs and alternatives, lessons learned with root causes, five-dimension prompt quality scores with actionable improvement suggestions, and cross-session patterns. All data is stored locally in SQLite and can be explored through terminal analysis and a built-in dashboard. No account required, no cloud sync, and data never leaves your machine. It supports free local analysis with Ollama and zero-configuration analysis with a Claude subscription, and also provides an AI fluency score, activity charts, and cost statistics broken down by project and model.

About this tool

Purpose

code-insights is used to turn AI coding sessions into accumulated knowledge. It analyzes your session records in tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Copilot CLI, and VS Code Copilot Chat, extracting structured insights to help you better understand how you collaborate with AI and improve accordingly.

Main Capabilities

  • Decisions, Lessons, and Prompt Quality: Every session is analyzed to extract structured insights, including decisions with trade-offs and alternatives, lessons learned with root causes, and prompt quality scores covering 5 dimensions, accompanied by actionable before-and-after improvement points.
  • Cross-Session Patterns: A weekly synthesis detects friction points, effective patterns, and prompt quality trends across all sessions. It supports browsing by week to observe habit changes, and the generated rules can be exported for use in your CLAUDE.md or .cursorrules.
  • AI Fluency Score: Summarizes the above analysis into an AI Fluency Score, serving as a shareable snapshot of your coding fingerprint, work style, and main patterns.
  • Analytics and Cost Tracking: Activity charts, cost breakdowns by project and model, session types, and multi-tool usage, all in one dashboard.
  • Terminal Analysis: No browser needed; run code-insights stats to get the full view in your terminal.

How to Use

  • Session data is automatically discovered during sync. Sessions from supported AI tools are automatically included in the analysis.
  • Claude Code users can get zero-configuration, zero-cost analysis: install a hook once, and every subsequent session will be automatically analyzed using your Claude subscription.
  • Ollama is supported: free, local, and no API key required. If Ollama is already installed, code-insights will automatically detect it and use it for AI analysis, with no account required, no cost, and data never leaving your machine.
  • For the full CLI reference, see cli/README.md.

Project Structure

This is a monorepo containing three packages:

  • cli/ — Node.js CLI, session providers, SQLite writes, terminal analysis
  • server/ — Hono API server, REST endpoints, LLM proxy (API keys remain on the server side)
  • dashboard/ — Vite + React SPA, served by the Hono server

Privacy and Data

Session data remains on your machine at ~/.code-insights/data.db. No account required, no cloud sync. Anonymous usage telemetry can be opted out of (code-insights telemetry disable). LLM analysis uses your own API key (or local Ollama) — session content is only sent to the provider you configure.
