About this tool

license-verify-mcp is an MCP-native contractor license verification service whose distinctive feature is returning official Surety Bond and Insurance information from U.S. state government data, rather than just the valid or invalid status of a license. The project is available through the GitHub repository (https://github.com/lmaniraruta/license-verify-mcp)发布,并采用按成功付费(Pay-per-success)的定价模式。

Purpose The tool is used to verify the license status of U.S. contractors and additionally provide official surety bond and insurance information for scenarios that require verifying contractor qualifications, such as MCP-compatible agents or clients like Claude Desktop.

Main Capabilities

  • Tools: Provides two MCP tools, verify_license and list_supported_jurisdictions.
  • verify_license: Verifies contractor license status. Parameters include jurisdiction (required, "WA" or "CA"), as well as license_number and/or business_name (at least one must be provided).
  • list_supported_jurisdictions: Lists all supported states along with their status and data sources.
  • Returned status values are always one of the following: active | expired | suspended | revoked | unknown.
  • On failure, returns: { "found": false, "error": "SESSION_ERROR|NETWORK_ERROR|...", "message": "..." }, without crashing and without charging.

State Support

  • Washington (WA): Reliable and production-ready region. Official WA L&I open data is provided via Socrata JSON, with no scraping and no rate limits; surety bond and insurance data come from dedicated datasets.
  • California (CA): Beta. CSLB does not provide an open API; the provider retrieves HTML detail pages directly. CSLB intermittently rate-limits automated requests or returns 503. When unavailable, verify_license returns a clean SESSION_ERROR; no charge is made when the source fails. CA should not be used in production workflows until the server-side CSLB operation is confirmed to be stable.

Usage The tool is an MCP server (stdio mode) and can be used with Claude Desktop, Smithery, or any MCP-compatible agent. For configuration, the corresponding MCP configuration must be set up in Claude Desktop.

Pricing

  • Full result: $0.03
  • Status only: $0.01
  • Miss: free
  • Charges apply only when found: true; verification errors, no results found, and source failures are not charged.
  • Eligible for Agentic-payments: event-based pricing, limited permissions, no Standby mode.

Use Cases Suitable for workflows that need to verify U.S. contractor licenses and obtain official surety bond and insurance information, especially for MCP-compatible agents and Claude Desktop users. Washington is the recommended production region; California is in beta and is not recommended for production.

Limitations

  • California (CA) is in beta, CSLB has no open API, data is obtained through HTML detail pages, and it may encounter rate limiting or 503, so stability is insufficient; CA should not be relied upon for production workflows until stable server-side operation is confirmed.
  • Washington (WA) is a reliable, production-ready region, using official L&I open data, with no scraping and no rate limits.
  • Details not yet provided regarding charges, prices, platform, effectiveness, etc. are not yet available.
