boikot is a community-driven initiative dedicated to making corporate ethics data transparent and easily accessible. Its goal is to build a community-maintained, transparent, and freely accessible collection of corporate ethics records. By documenting companies' ethical and unethical business practices, the project aims to help consumers make informed choices, increase the cost of harmful business decisions, and incentivize companies to act responsibly in ways that serve the public interest.
All services and data are provided freely to the public under the GPL v3 license. Users can download the complete company dataset from the boikot.json file in the repository.
The main product is the boikot.xyz website, which provides access to the data as well as tools for adding new records. It is a React project located in the site directory. In addition, the scripts and backend directories contain some tools for collecting and aggregating information.
The project also provides an MCP server that exposes a tool for querying company ethics information. The server is available via the URL https://mcp.boikot.xyz/mcp and requires no authentication. It provides a tool named lookup_company_information that accepts one parameter, company_name, and returns the company's ethics information.
The boikot.json file is a database containing the ethical and unethical practices of different companies. Each entry in the "companies" object represents a company ethics record. Each entry has:
- A "names" array: contains the names that can be used for the company, with the first entry being the most commonly used name.
- A "comment" string: a comment about the company's ethics, with sources indicated by numbers in square brackets, for example [1][2]. The URLs of these sources are in the "sources" object, which is a mapping from source numbers to URLs.
- A "tags" array: string tags describing the company.
- "logoUrl" and "siteUrl": the URLs of the company's logo image and website.
- An "updatedAt" timestamp: the last update time of the record.
Users can run the website locally using the run.sh script in the repository root. The script starts the web frontend and also starts a local backend that provides additional functionality.
