Overview
LlamaIndex is an open-source framework designed to help developers build LLM-based agent applications. Its core goal is to solve how to combine private data with LLMs, namely the problem of data augmentation. The project is maintained by the company LlamaIndex, which has also launched the enterprise-grade document agent platform LlamaParse.
Main Capabilities
- Data Connectors: Supports ingesting data from various data sources and formats such as APIs, PDFs, documents, and SQL.
- Data Indexing: Provides structures such as indexes and graphs, making data easy for LLMs to use.
- Retrieval and Querying: Provides advanced retrieval/query interfaces that can accept arbitrary LLM prompts and return retrieved context and knowledge-augmented output.
- Integration and Extension: Can be easily integrated with external application frameworks such as LangChain, Flask, Docker, ChatGPT, and others.
- Multi-level APIs: High-level APIs allow beginners to complete data ingestion and querying in about 5 lines of code; low-level APIs allow advanced users to customize and extend modules (data connectors, indexes, retrievers, query engines, reranking modules, etc.).
Usage
There are two ways to build LlamaIndex applications in Python:
- Starter: Use the
llama-indexpackage, which includes the core and selected integrations. - Customized: Install
llama-index-coreand add integration packages as needed.
LlamaIndex core package namespace: if the import statement includes core , it means the core package is used; if it does not include it, an integration package is used.
By default, data is stored in memory. Persisting to disk (the./storage directory) and reloading can be achieved through the corresponding APIs.
LlamaParse can be used independently or in combination with the LlamaIndex framework. Its features include Parse, Extract, Index (ingestion and RAG), Split, and Agents (building end-to-end document agents through Workflows and Agent Builder).
Applicable Scenarios
- Building RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) applications.
- Building data-augmented LLM applications.
- Handling scenarios that require extracting context from complex documents, such as enterprise document automation.
- Development projects that need to integrate multiple data sources and LLM providers.
Limitations and Notes
- Documentation and README may not be updated in a timely manner; it is recommended to consult the official documentation for the latest information.
- New integrations need to integrate meaningfully with existing LlamaIndex framework components, and may be rejected.
- Storage is in memory by default and must be persisted manually.
- The included
_staticfolder provides nltk and tiktoken caches for environments with restricted disk access; its security can be verified through GitHub attestations. - If you use LlamaIndex in a paper, you need to cite the specified references.
