About this tool

Purpose

newsagent-mcp is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for the NewsAgent Data API, used to let AI agents (such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, etc.) directly query scored, classified Russian and English news intelligence. It is mainly aimed at AI application scenarios that require news monitoring, public opinion analysis, or event tracking.

Main capabilities

The server wraps the NewsAgent Data API, and every article returned already has the following preprocessing results:

  • Urgency score (0–10)
  • Political lean classification
  • Topic classification
  • Country classification
  • Audience classification
  • Deduplication processing

Because the results are already pre-scored and pre-classified, users do not need to build their own NLP pipeline. The documentation mentions that the server provides five tools, which appear automatically after integration. Example prompts include: get breaking sanctions news from Russia scored 7 and above; search for English news about "central bank rates" from the last 14 days; use get_feed with political_lean to compare how national media and opposition media report on Ukraine; query the number of countries and sources covered in real time.

How to use

  1. Get a free API Key:https://newsagentdata.com/signup/?plan=free
  2. Install dependencies:pip install -r requirements.txt
  3. Add the server to the MCP client configuration: Claude Desktop uses claude_desktop_config.json; for Cursor / Cline, point the MCP server command to newsagent_mcp.py and set NEWSAGENT_API_KEY in the environment variables.
  4. Restart the client, and the five tools will appear automatically.

The API host address can be overridden by setting the environment variable NEWSAGENT_API_BASE (default https://api.newsagentdata.com ).

Applicable scenarios

  • Breaking news monitoring: filter high-priority news by urgency score.
  • Public opinion and political lean analysis: compare reports on the same event from sources with different political leans.
  • Multilingual news retrieval: supports Russian and English.
  • Multi-country event tracking: filter by country, topic, audience, and other dimensions.
  • Real-time coverage statistics: query the number of countries and sources currently covered.

Limitations

  • The free/developer tier has a historical window limit (1–7 days) and a daily quota.
  • The server returns 401/403/429 status codes as clear errors.
  • The list_sources tool requires a Standard tier key; channel handles are never exposed.
  • The specific names of the five tools, parameter details, tier pricing, and quota values are not yet provided in the materials.
