About this tool

Monarch Money MCP Server is a server based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), designed to provide AI assistants (such as Claude Desktop) with read-only access to Monarch Money financial data in order to analyze financial information, transactions, budgets, and cash flow data. This tool is open-sourced on GitHub by an individual developer, and the author states that it was created out of personal interest and for learning purposes, is not affiliated with Monarch Money officially, and because there is no need to modify data, currently only read-only operations are supported.

Main capabilities include: read-only access to Monarch Money accounts; support for transaction analysis by date range and search; budget tracking and cash flow analysis; account detail queries (including investment holdings); secure authentication with MFA (multi-factor authentication) support; session persistence to reduce repeated authentication.

In terms of usage: the uv package manager (recommended) and a Monarch Money account are required. Installation steps include cloning the repository, using uv to install dependencies (uv add mcp monarchmoney python-dotenv), configuring environment variables (copy .env.example to .env, and fill in credentials such as MONARCH_EMAIL, MONARCH_PASSWORD, MONARCH_MFA_SECRET), testing the connection (python test_api.py), and starting the MCP server. It can be integrated with Claude Desktop by adding configuration in claude_desktop_config.json.

Available resources include: monarch://accounts (all linked accounts), monarch://transactions/recent (the most recent 100 transactions), monarch://budgets (budget information, including actual vs. target comparison), monarch://cashflow/summary (income, expenses, and savings summary). Available tools include: get_transactions (filter transactions by date range), get_account_details (detailed account information, including holdings), get_cashflow_analysis (analyze cash flow by category and time period), search_transactions (search transactions by description or merchant), get_categories (all transaction categories), get_institutions (linked financial institutions).

Example prompts include: "Show my recent transactions from last month", "What is my current budget status?", "Analyze my spending patterns by category", "How much did I spend on groceries this year?", "What is my investment account balance?".

Security and limitations: the server is read-only, with no write operations; login credentials remain on the local machine; session caching is supported to reduce authentication frequency; MFA two-factor authentication is recommended. Troubleshooting methods include: running the debug script python debug_server.py, checking environment variables, clearing the session cache (rm -rf .mm/), setting the MONARCH_MFA_SECRET environment variable, deleting the .mm/ directory to force a new login, and ensuring dependencies are installed.

The project structure, testing methods (installing test dependencies, running the unit test suite, coverage testing, manual API testing), and contribution guidelines (fork the repository, create a feature branch, make changes, test, submit a pull request) are also mentioned in the documentation.
