About this tool

Purpose

SommelierX mcp-server is a wine pairing MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for AI assistants, used to bring sommelier-level pairing capabilities into Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, or other MCP-compatible clients. Once connected, users can directly ask the AI assistant pairing questions, such as "What wine goes with grilled salmon?", and the assistant will call this server to get recommendations.

Main Capabilities

The server is powered by the SommelierX Wine DNA algorithm, which calculates matches based on 17 food DNA dimensions and 19 wine DNA dimensions. The main capabilities mentioned in the materials include:

  • Pairing: match wine with ingredients and dishes;
  • Reverse pairing: given a wine, recommend dishes suitable for cooking;
  • Recipe link pairing: provide pairing suggestions based on a recipe URL;
  • Multi-course pairing: for example, recommend one universal wine for an entire menu containing Caesar salad, lamb chops, and chocolate mousse;
  • Pro API Key also supports recipe extraction, grouped pairing, and score details. When using pair_wine_with_ingredients, the server automatically resolves natural-language ingredient names into database entries, so the AI assistant does not need to know database IDs and can simply pass in ingredient names.

How to Use

Add the configuration in ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json; Cursor, Windsurf, and other MCP clients use the same configuration by adding command and args to the client's MCP settings. After configuration is complete, ask the AI assistant a question, and the assistant will call the corresponding SommelierX tool; the MCP server converts the input into a structured API call and returns wine recommendations with scores.

Authentication supports two methods; choose either one, no need to configure both:

  1. API Key (subscription): set the environment variable SOMMELIERX_API_KEY in the MCP client configuration. The key format is sk_live_..., and monthly call quota is granted according to the plan (Free / Pro / Enterprise). You can get an API Key at api.sommelierx.com.
  2. x402 payment(pay-per-use): no API Key required; the AI agent pays per use via the Coinbase x402 protocol using USDC on the Base network. When a request lacks an API Key, the server returns a 402 Payment Required response and payment payload, which x402-compatible agents handle automatically. It is suitable for AI agents that manage their own wallets, on-demand pay-per-use without a subscription, and agent-to-agent commerce (without human intervention).

When using an API Key, calls are deducted from the plan quota; when using x402, each call is charged at the listed price.

Use Cases

  • Ordinary users asking an AI assistant about everyday food pairings;
  • Planning a multi-course dinner and looking for a universal wine;
  • Working backward from a known wine to dishes that can be cooked;
  • Getting pairing suggestions based on an online recipe URL;
  • Agent-to-agent commerce in which an AI agent automatically manages a wallet and pays per use.

Limitations

Requires Node.js >= 18.0.0. Recipe extraction, grouped pairing, and score details are supported only with a Pro API Key. x402 requires an agent compatible with that protocol to handle the 402 payment response.
