Purpose
Crab Code is a native agentic coding CLI built from scratch in Rust, positioned as an open-source alternative to Claude Code. It can think, plan, and execute during coding tasks, and can be used with any LLM. Its goal is to align with Claude Code's toolset, permission model, and interaction patterns while maintaining compatibility with multiple model providers, thereby supporting Claude Code workflows.
Main Capabilities
- Supports any LLM provider, including Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, Bedrock, Vertex.
- Aligns with Claude Code's toolset, permission model, and interaction patterns.
- Compatible with Claude Code workflows.
- Uses a multi-entry architecture covering CLI, IDE, Web, and desktop.
- Configuration is located at ~/.crab/config.toml (snake_case TOML). See docs/config-design.md for the complete loading and merging specification.
Usage
The project is a command-line tool and can be viewed via crab --help for detailed instructions. Configuration is written in a configuration file, with the default location being ~/.crab/config.toml (snake_case TOML format).
The priority of configuration sources from lowest to highest is:
- User level: ~/.crab/config.toml (or $CRAB_CONFIG_DIR/config.toml)
- Project level: $PWD/.crab/config.toml (can be committed)
- Local level: $PWD/.crab/config.local.toml (ignored by gitignore)
- --config <path>: file injected by the CLI
- -c key.path=value: runtime override of a dotted path (TOML syntax, repeatable)
Environment variables (runtime layer) always take precedence over file configuration; among mutually exclusive configuration items, the one with higher priority takes effect.
Project Status and Structure
The project is in active development and includes 4,940 tests, 25 crates, and about 161,000 lines of code. The 25 Rust crates are divided into 4 layers; see docs/architecture.md for details. The license is Apache-2.0.
Limitations
The materials do not provide specific installation commands, a list of supported platforms, or pricing and billing information, and none is currently provided.
