What is Surya
Surya is a powerful open-source OCR (optical character recognition)toolkit designed specifically for document recognition, supporting recognition of over 90 languages. Surya can accurately recognize text in documents, analyze the reading order of text, detect layout elements in documents such as tables, images, and headings, and recognize and parse table content. Surya is known for its efficient table recognition capability, outperforming many existing open-source models such as Table Transformer. Surya is completely free and available for commercial use, supports cross-platform operation including Windows, Mac, and Linux systems, and is suitable for offline environments handling sensitive information.
Surya's main features
- Multilingual OCR recognition: Surya supports optical character recognition in over 90 languages, handling documents in languages including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and more.
- Table recognition: Surya strengthens table recognition functionality, capable of recognizing rows, columns, and cells in documents, even including rotated and complex-layout tables.
- Complex layout recognition: Surya can recognize complex layouts in documents, such as headings, images, etc., handling various elements in documents.
- Text detection and reading order: Surya can perform line-level text detection and determine the reading order of text, ensuring the output text content is in the correct order.
Surya's technical principles
- Deep learning models: Surya recognizes text and layout elements in documents based on deep learning models. The models are trained on large amounts of data to recognize and understand the structure and content of documents.
- Semantic segmentation: In text detection, Surya uses deep learning-based semantic segmentation technology to separate text regions from non-text regions in documents.
- Object detection: For layout analysis, Surya uses object detection technology to identify different elements in documents, such as tables, images, and headings.
- Sequence models: In reading order detection, Surya uses sequence models to analyze the relative positions and directions between text lines to determine the correct reading order.
- Optimized algorithms: Surya performs optimization at the algorithm level to improve processing speed and accuracy.
