StarCoder 2 - The second-generation open-source code LLM launched by BigCode

Author: AI小集 · Original source: AI工具集

What is StarCoder 2

StarCoder 2 is a new-generation large code language model developed by the BigCode project (supported by Hugging Face and ServiceNow) together with Nvidia's team. It was trained on 3.3 to 4.3 trillion code tokens from The Stack v2 dataset, covering more than 600 programming languages, and is designed to provide strong support for code completion, editing, and reasoning tasks. This model series was further expanded and improved based on the previous generation of StarCoder models, offering models of different sizes, including versions with 3B (3 billion parameters), 7B (7 billion parameters), and 15B (15 billion parameters) parameters.

Main features of StarCoder 2

  • Large-scale training dataset: StarCoder2's training dataset (The Stack v2) is based on the source code archive of Software Heritage (a nonprofit organization providing code archiving services), which is a massive code base containing more than 600 programming languages. In addition, it integrates other high-quality data sources, such as GitHub Pull Requests, Kaggle, and Jupyter Notebook code documentation, making the training set 4 times larger than the first-generation StarCoder.

  • Diverse model sizes: StarCoder2 offers models of different sizes, including versions with 3B (3 billion parameters), 7B (7 billion parameters), and 15B (15 billion parameters) parameters, to accommodate different application needs and resource constraints.
  • High performance: In multiple code LLM benchmarks, StarCoder 2's models perform excellently on code completion, editing, and reasoning tasks. Especially among other models of similar scale (such as DeepSeekCoder, StableCode, CodeLlama, etc.), StarCoder2-3B and StarCoder2-15B both show leading performance.

  • Open and transparent: StarCoder 2's model weights are released under the OpenRAIL license, ensuring full transparency of the training data. Researchers and developers are allowed to independently audit the model and freely use it under the premise of complying with the license agreement.
  • Responsible development practices: StarCoder 2's development follows responsible AI principles, including protection of personal privacy, security considerations, and vigilance against potential social bias and representational bias.

Functional features of StarCoder 2

  • Code completion: StarCoder 2 can provide code completion suggestions for developers, helping them write and optimize code faster. This includes automatically completing code snippets, function and class definitions, and more.
  • Code editing and refactoring: The model can assist developers with code editing, including fixing errors, improving code structure and style, and performing code refactoring tasks.
  • Code reasoning: StarCoder 2 has the ability to understand code logic and perform code reasoning, and can handle more complex programming tasks, such as understanding the expected behavior of code and generating corresponding code.
  • Cross-language support: Since the training dataset contains multiple programming languages, StarCoder 2 can support code generation and understanding in multiple languages, making it particularly useful in multilingual projects.
  • Interactive programming assistance: StarCoder 2 can serve as an interactive programming assistant, communicating with developers through natural language, understanding their intent, and providing corresponding code solutions.
  • Documentation and comment generation: The model can also automatically generate documentation and comments based on code content, helping developers better understand and maintain code.
  • Security and privacy protection: StarCoder 2 was designed with security and privacy protection in mind, capable of avoiding the inclusion of sensitive information in generated code and reducing potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Openness and auditability: StarCoder 2's model weights and training data are open, allowing researchers and developers to audit them, ensuring the model's transparency and trustworthiness.
