What is SpatialLM
SpatialLM is an open-source multimodal model for spatial understanding from Manycore Tech, giving robots and intelligent systems spatial cognition capabilities similar to those of humans. By analyzing videos captured with ordinary smartphones, it can reconstruct detailed 3D scene layouts and annotate information such as room structure, furniture placement, and passage width. The model is based on a large language model framework and combines point cloud reconstruction and structured representation techniques to transform scenes in videos into structured 3D models, providing an efficient foundational framework for embodied intelligence training.
Main Features of SpatialLM
- Video-to-3D scene generation: SpatialLM can transform videos captured with ordinary smartphones into detailed 3D scene layouts. By analyzing each frame in the video, it reconstructs the three-dimensional structure of the scene, including information such as room layout, furniture placement, and passage width.
- Spatial cognition and reasoning: The model breaks through the limitations of traditional large language models in understanding the geometry and spatial relationships of the physical world, giving machines spatial cognition and parsing capabilities similar to those of humans. It can perform semantic understanding of objects in a scene, generate structured 3D scene layouts, and annotate the objects' three-dimensional coordinates, size parameters, and category information.
- Low-cost data collection: SpatialLM does not require complex sensors or smart wearable devices; videos captured with ordinary smartphones or cameras can serve as data input. This greatly lowers the data collection threshold for developers, enabling more enterprises and researchers to quickly carry out related research.
- Embodied intelligence training: SpatialLM provides a foundational spatial understanding training framework for the field of embodied intelligence. Enterprises can fine-tune the model for specific scenarios to achieve robot navigation, obstacle avoidance, and task execution capabilities in complex environments. Combined with Manycore Tech's spatial intelligence training platform SpatialVerse, robots can complete skill learning in simulated environments, forming a complete closed loop from cognition to action.
- Virtual scene generation: SpatialLM can transform real-world data into rich scenes in virtual environments. Through its synthetic data engine, it can generalize and generate hundreds of millions of new scenes, providing strong support for fields such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and game development.
Technical Principles of SpatialLM
- Video input and point cloud reconstruction: SpatialLM uses MASt3R-SLAM technology to process input RGB video. It breaks the video into frames, extracts detailed spatial points of objects, calculates their depth and position, and generates a high-density 3D point cloud model.
- Point cloud encoding and feature extraction: The point cloud data is converted by an encoder into compact feature vectors. Key geometric and semantic information of objects in the scene is preserved.
- Large language model generates scene code: Through a large language model (LLM), point cloud features are transformed into structured scene code. It contains the coordinates and dimensions of the spatial structure and annotates the semantic bounding boxes of objects (such as "sofa - 1.8 meters long - 0.5 meters from the wall").
- Structured 3D layout generation: The scene code is further converted into a structured 3D scene layout, clearly annotating each object's three-dimensional coordinates, size parameters, and category information. It can be restored by visualization tools into an interactive 3D scene.
- Embedding of physical rules: SpatialLM has built-in physical common sense (such as "furniture cannot float in the air" and "passage width >= 0.8 meters"), ensuring that the generated 3D scene conforms to physical rules.
