What is Soundwave
Soundwave is an open-source large speech understanding model from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, focused on intelligent alignment and understanding between speech and text. Through innovative alignment adapter and shrinking adapter technologies, it effectively addresses the differences between speech and text in representation space, achieves efficient speech feature compression, and can better handle speech tasks.
Soundwave's main features
- Speech-text alignment: Soundwave can precisely align speech signals with text. By designing an alignment adapter and a shrinking adapter, it converts audio sequences into a representation space that large models can understand, while dynamically compressing the speech sequence length to match the text.
- Speech translation: The model performs excellently in speech translation tasks, and can translate speech input in one language into text or speech output in another language. It has efficient alignment capabilities and strong language understanding capabilities.
- Speech question answering: Soundwave supports speech question answering. Users can ask questions by voice, and the model can understand the question and answer in speech or text form.
- Speech emotion recognition: Soundwave can recognize emotional information in speech. By analyzing features such as pitch, speaking rate, and intensity of the speech, it determines the speaker's emotional state (such as happiness, sadness, anger, etc.).
- Multimodal interaction: The model also supports multimodal interaction, and can combine multiple input forms such as speech and text to provide a richer interactive experience.
Soundwave's technical principles
- Speech-text alignment: Alignment between speech and text is achieved by designing an Alignment Adapter and using CTC loss. The alignment adapter contains a linear layer and a single-layer Transformer Encoder layer, and can convert audio sequences into a representation space that large models can understand, ensuring that speech and text can interact in the same representation space.
- Speech feature compression: At this stage, the model dynamically compresses the length of the speech sequence through a Shrinking Adapter to match the text. First, semantic features are selected based on the peaks predicted by CTC, then based on these features, auxiliary information (such as paralinguistic information, etc.) is queried and collected from the original sequence, and finally these two types of features are fused to achieve reduction of the sequence length.
- Supervised fine-tuning: In the fine-tuning stage, the model only adjusts LoRA parameters, improving task handling capabilities based on text and speech instruction data. Through learning from multiple question-answer formats, speech tasks, and instruction formats, the model enhances instruction following and speech understanding capabilities.

Soundwave's application scenarios
- Intelligent voice assistant: Soundwave can be integrated into intelligent voice assistants (such as smart home devices, smart speakers, etc.) to provide a more natural and accurate voice interaction experience. Users can query information, control devices, set reminders, etc. through voice commands.
- Speech translation: Soundwave is very useful for scenarios such as international conferences, travel, and online education. It can help users overcome language barriers and achieve barrier-free communication.
- Language learning assistance: Through voice translation and voice question-answering features, Soundwave can help students practice foreign language pronunciation, understand grammatical structures, and improve language learning outcomes.
- Content Creation: Soundwave can be used in the field of content creation, for example, to automatically generate video subtitles, audio scripts, and more.
- Voice Medical Record Transcription: Doctors can record medical records by voice, and Soundwave can convert them into accurate written records, saving doctors' time and improving work efficiency.
