What is SocraticLM
SocraticLM is an innovative artificial intelligence model that teaches mathematics through the Socratic teaching method. The model was jointly developed by USTC and iFLYTEK and adopts the "Thought-Provoking" teaching paradigm, guiding students to actively think and solve problems through questioning. SocraticLM was fine-tuned on a dataset named SocraTeach, which contains 35,000 carefully designed multi-turn teaching dialogues that simulate real teaching scenarios. Experimental results show that SocraticLM significantly outperforms GPT-4 in teaching performance, with an overall quality improvement of 12%. The model is also equipped with a comprehensive evaluation system containing five teaching dimensions, used to comprehensively evaluate the teaching quality of large language models. The development of SocraticLM not only improves teaching effectiveness, but also provides new ideas for the development of educational technology.

Technical principles of SocraticLM
- Multi-agent interaction process: SocraticLM adopts a "Dean-Teacher-Student" multi-agent interaction process. In this process, the Dean is responsible for supervising and optimizing the teacher's teaching instructions to ensure that the entire teaching process conforms to the Socratic style; the teacher is responsible for generating Socratic teaching instructions and gradually guiding students to solve problems.
- Step-level guided question decomposition: In order to control the logic and consistency of the teaching process, SocraticLM designed step-level guided question decomposition technology. This method can split the complex teaching process into multiple steps and generate corresponding guiding questions in each step.
