What is SlideChat

SlideChat is the first vision-language assistant capable of understanding gigapixel-level whole-slide images, launched by institutions including Shanghai AI Laboratory, Xiamen University, and East China Normal University. SlideChat can generate detailed whole-slide image descriptions and provide contextually relevant complex instruction responses for diverse pathology scenarios. Based on training, SlideChat demonstrates outstanding performance in multiple clinical tasks, including microscopy examination and diagnosis. SlideChat uses the large-scale multimodal instruction dataset SlideInstruction and the evaluation benchmark SlideBench, the latter containing multiple subsets and covering 21 different clinical tasks.

SlideChat

SlideChat's main features

  • Whole-slide image understanding: Processes and understands gigapixel-level whole-slide pathology images (WSIs), providing in-depth analysis of the images.
  • Multimodal dialogue capability: Supports multimodal dialogue with users, understands natural language instructions, and provides responses combined with visual information.
  • Complex instruction response: Responds to and executes complex visual queries and pathology-related instructions.
  • Clinical task coverage: Demonstrates outstanding performance in various clinical settings, such as microscopy examination and diagnosis, covering 21 different clinical tasks.

SlideChat's technical principles

  • Image segmentation: Segments whole-slide images into small 224×224 pixel patches to facilitate computational processing.
  • Local encoder: Each image patch is converted into a visual embedding based on the local encoder, capturing local features.
  • Slide-level encoder: Uses the slide-level encoder to process the output of the local encoder, generating context embeddings that contain global contextual information.
  • Multimodal projection: The multimodal projector maps visual features into a unified space aligned with the large language model (LLM).
  • Two-stage training:
    • Cross-domain alignment: In the first stage, the model learns to align the LLM's word embeddings with visual features extracted from WSIs.
    • Visual instruction learning: In the second stage, the model learns how to accurately respond to WSI-specific domain questions.
