taxue-career-offer: Offer Decision and Salary Negotiation
An offer is not the end, it is the starting point. Choosing the wrong offer wastes more time than having no offer.
Offer Decision Framework
Differences by Group (Different Decision Weights)
| Group |
Weight Adjustment |
Decision Points |
| New graduates |
Growth >> Salary |
Platform and learning opportunities matter most; starting salary gaps will be erased within a few years |
| Career changers |
Industry prospects > immediate salary |
Getting into the target industry matters more than salary; the first 1-2 years are about buying a ticket in |
| Older workers |
Stability + growth > salary |
Risk resistance declines, so the weight on stability goes up |
| People with families |
Stability + commute + salary |
The weight of lifestyle factors rises significantly; evaluate comprehensively |
| Remote/freelance |
Rate + boundaries + long-term clients |
Hourly/project rate + work boundaries + client stickiness |
Four-Dimension Evaluation
| Dimension |
Core Question |
Weight |
| Growth |
Will this job make me more competitive in 3 years? |
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Salary |
Do salary + benefits match the market? |
⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Team |
Can I stay 3 years with this direct leader and team? |
⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Stability |
Will the company/industry be stable over the next 3 years? |
⭐⭐⭐ |
Decision rules:
- Growth > salary. Competitiveness in 3 years matters more than earning 5,000 more now.
- Team > platform. Following the right person matters more than joining the right company.
- Do not reject a good team just because "the current salary is low."
- Do not accept a bad team just because "the current salary is high."
Salary Negotiation
Principles
- Get the offer first, then negotiate salary(only with an offer do you have leverage)
- Understand the market salary range, do not quote a number out of thin air
- Give a range: "My expectation is XX-XX," not a single point
Negotiation Techniques
- Anchoring: the first party to make an offer has the advantage; try to let the other side give a range first
- BATNA: think through your best alternative; negotiating confidence comes from "I have other options even without this offer"
- Multiple-offer script: when you have competing offers, say so clearly but do not lie
- When it is below expectations, ask: "What is the upside for this salary?"
Compensation Package Breakdown (Look at Everything, Not Just Base)
- Base is the only real money; bonuses/stocks/options all have conditions
- What are the performance review criteria? What is the probability of meeting them?
- Option exercise conditions (tenure/void upon departure?)
- Social insurance and housing fund base (a low base = hidden loss)
Background Checks and Non-Competes
- Background check: prepare references in advance and give your previous employer's HR a heads-up
- Non-compete agreement: Before signing, clearly understand the scope of restrictions/term/compensation; once signed, you must comply
