About this skill

Panel Composition — Specialized Panel Composition Methodology

Composition expertise that storyboarder and image-generator agents use when designing comic panels and generating images.

Why Composition Determines Comics

Comics are a medium that converts time into space. In film, time flows, but in comics, the reader creates time by moving their gaze. The size, shape, and arrangement of panels are precisely the direction of time and emotion.

Basic Panel Layout Patterns

4-Panel Comic Layout

Pattern Structure Suitable Story
Introduction-Development-Twist-Conclusion Four equal-size vertical panels Comedy, slice-of-life observation
Wide Close Wide→Standard→Standard→Close-up Drama, emotional emphasis
줌 인 Long shot→Medium shot→Close shot→Close-up Building tension, discovery
Time Jump Past→Present→Present→Result Contrast, growth

Webtoon Layout (Vertical Scroll)

Direction Technique Panel Composition Effect
Expanded whitespace Increase whitespace between panels to 2–3x Passage of time, lingering feeling
Full-width panel Use the full screen width Impact, scene transition
Tall vertical panel A panel with a long height Falling, altitude, sense of overwhelm
Continuous cuts 3–5 small panels in succession Fast action, tension
Silent panel Scenery/expressions without dialogue Emotional breathing room, inviting reader interpretation

Emotional Effects by Camera Angle

Angle Emotional Effect Usage Situation Prompt Keyword
Low angle (looking up) Intimidation, authority, heroic Character introduction, confrontation "low angle shot, looking up"
High angle (looking down) Weakness, isolation, full view Crisis, solitude "high angle shot, bird's eye"
Eye level (eye height) Equality, objectivity Dialogue, everyday life "eye level shot"
Dutch angle (tilted) Anxiety, tension, confusion Psychological anxiety, danger "dutch angle, tilted frame"
Over-the-shoulder Tension in dialogue, point of view Dialogue, confrontation "over the shoulder shot"
POV (first-person) Immersion, reader=character Horror, discovery "POV shot, first person"

Relationship Between Panel Size and Time

작은 패널 = 짧은 시간 (빠른 액션, 순간)
큰 패널 = 긴 시간 (여유, 감정, 풍경)
테두리 없는 패널 = 시간 정지 (몽상, 플래시백)

Usage Guide by Size

Size Ratio Purpose
Small (1/6 page) 15% Reactions, sound effects, catching a moment
Medium (1/4 page) 25% Standard dialogue, ordinary actions
Large (1/2 page) 50% Emotional moments, action highlights
Full (full page) 100% Establishing shots, climax
Double spread (2 pages) 200% Maximum impact, battle panorama

Reading Flow Rules

  1. Entry Point: The place where the reader's gaze first lands on each page — place the most important information here
  2. Gaze Path: Direct the character's gaze so that it points to the next panel
  3. Speech Bubble Order: Arrange in top→bottom, left→right order (based on horizontal Korean writing)
  4. Action Direction: Movement toward the right = advancing/progressing, left = retreating/flashback

Page Rhythm Design: Musical Patterns

Rhythm Pattern Panel Composition Effect
강-약-강-약 Large-small-large-small Stable, dialogue scenes
약-약-약-강! Small-small-small-full page Building tension → explosion
강-약-약-약 Large introduction → small progression Details after a scene transition
Uniform All the same size Uniform flow of time, everyday life
Decrescendo 큰→중→작→작 Zoom in, focus
Crescendo 작→작→중→큰 Zoom out, expanding scale

Image Generation Prompt Structure

[스타일] [앵글] [구도]. [인물 묘사]. [동작/표정].
[배경/환경]. [조명]. [감정/분위기].
[텍스트 지시: 한글 대사 또는 NO TEXT]

Prompt Example

Korean manhwa style, medium shot, slightly low angle.
A young woman with short black hair in a lab coat,
looking surprised with wide eyes, holding a broken test tube.
Modern laboratory background with blue LED lighting.
Dramatic side lighting, tense atmosphere.
Speech bubble text MUST be in Korean: '이건... 불가능한 결과야'
