About this skill

Personal Brand Strategy

Builds an individual's public profile, separate from their organisation, from positioning to reputation, platforms, authority and income, adapted to East African client types from professionals to pastors and politicians.

Use When

  • A CEO, doctor, lawyer or pastor wants a public profile separate from the organisation's brand.
  • Someone needs a personal positioning statement and reputation plan to be invited to speak or quoted by the media.
  • We must choose between LinkedIn, Facebook, X and WhatsApp Status and set a routine a busy person can keep.
  • Bios, speaker introductions, elevator pitches, or a press kit and one-sheet for brand partnerships are needed.
  • The person wants to turn authority into income through speaking, consulting, courses or partnerships.

Do Not Use When

  • biz-dev-positioning for an agency's or consulting practice's positioning and proof.
  • strategy-creator-monetisation for detailed creator income routes and rate cards.
  • platform-linkedin for the LinkedIn channel operating plan.
  • Stop before posting on the person's accounts or publishing credential claims that have not been verified with them.

Required Inputs

Artefact Source/provider Required? If absent
Name, role/title and client type (Professional/Consultant, Executive, Politician, Performing Artist, Athlete, Local Celebrity, Pastor, Academic, Creative) The individual Yes Ask; do not apply a generic influencer template to a professional or public figure.
Industry or field, stated narrowly, and country/city The individual Yes Default to Uganda/East Africa and return pillar options for the person to choose from.
Current online presence: platforms, follower or connection counts, what is already published The individual; profile review Yes Audit the public profiles and mark counts not assessed.
Ranked primary goal and target audience ("who specifically must know this person?") The individual Yes Plan for Visibility only and hold monetisation until the goal is ranked.
Content comfort (ghost-written, voice-note-to-post, interview-to-content, self-created) and time per week The individual Yes Default to voice-note-to-post, the minimum-effort workflow.
Monetisation intent and model; verified credentials for bios The individual If monetising; before any bio Leave P.A.I.D.S. unselected; use only credentials the person has confirmed.

Workflow

  1. Confirm the subject is a person, not an organisation (biz-dev-positioning) or creator income routes (strategy-creator-monetisation), then run the intake and select the client-type row in the personal brand method.
  2. Build the foundation: the Three-Strand Test (Prolific, Passionate, Profitable), Sheahan's Wall, the KNOWN framework and the "problem you personally solved" question; stop and present the foundation for approval before any content plan.
  3. Write one Brand Positioning Statement ("I help [specific avatar] with [specific problem] through [unique mechanism/credential]", or the entertainer form), test it against DCPR, and set three specific pillars and three personality attributes.
  4. For executives, consultants and founders, run the reputation audit and build the four-lever plan with one authority route from the reputation reference.
  5. Set platform priority from the client-type guide and the VCP sequence (Visibility, then Credibility, then Profitability), with cadences, the content workflow for a busy person and the weekly quota.
  6. Plan authority beyond content (bio in 50, 150 and 300 words, speaking, media, peer collaborations, op-eds, Personal Board of Advisors) and, if monetising, the P.A.I.D.S. stream with Craft before Scale.
  7. Set SMART 6-month measures and the monthly review; check every credential, statistic and claim with the person, correct or remove any unverified one and rerun the check before the anti-slop gate and hand-off.

Outputs

Artefact Consumer Acceptance condition
Personal brand foundation: Brand DNA, BPS, DCPR result, three pillars, three attributes The individual (approver) One BPS sentence in the correct structure; each pillar narrow enough for "Uganda's leading voice on [X]".
Reputation plan (four levers, one authority route) for executive, consultant and founder clients The individual; chief of staff Built from an audit; two or three tactics per lever.
Platform and content plan with cadences, workflow and weekly quota Consultant or ghost-writer; 11-content-calendar Platform priority matches the client-type row; quota is a floor the person's time allows.
Authority and monetisation plan (bios, speaking, media, PBA, P.A.I.D.S.) The individual At least one external proof point per quarter; Craft before Scale.
6-month measurement table and monthly report format The individual; meta-reporting Every metric has a target and review cadence.

Evidence Produced

Evidence Format Acceptance condition
Credential verification log Table: claim, source, confirmed by the person No bio or profile claim is published unconfirmed.
Reputation audit (peer appraisal, reality gap, red box) Worksheet Completed before the four-lever plan for executive, consultant and founder clients.
6-month baseline Table of starting values Each value is taken from native analytics or marked not assessed.

Capability and Permission Boundaries

Read and search only; analysis is read-only. Publishing, spend, live account changes, outreach and personal-data processing need explicit, action-specific client authority. Posting on the person's accounts, pitching journalists or inviting board members on their behalf needs their approval for each action.

Degraded Mode

Without the person's confirmed goal, audience and credentials, return the narrowest qualified result and mark the affected checks not assessed. The foundation worksheet, BPS options and a client-type platform recommendation can still be delivered for the person to confirm.

Decision Rules

Condition Action Failure or risk avoided
The subject is a person rather than an organisation Select the relevant client-type branch and verify public-risk constraints. A generic influencer template harms a professional or public figure.
One of the three strands (Prolific, Passionate, Profitable) is missing Rework the positioning before writing the BPS. A brand that feels inauthentic, burns out within 12 months or earns nothing.
The person wants to serve several audiences, topics or platforms at once Apply Sheahan's Wall: one avatar, one core problem, one primary platform; expand after traction. Diluted focus, the leading cause of personal brand failure.
The plan jumps to fees, votes or partnerships first Re-sequence to Visibility, then Credibility, then Profitability. Personal brand campaigns that underperform.
The client is a politician or public official Lead on Facebook with WhatsApp Broadcast and X; treat LinkedIn as the journalist, NGO and donor channel; apply the anti-corruption guardrail for public-official sponsors. Missing voters and reputational or legal risk.
The person monetises before delivering results Start with Services; productise into Scale assets only after results and testimonials exist (Marcoux, 2016). Products launched without credibility.
Sponsored content would exceed 30 % of output Hold the 70/30 organic-to-sponsored ratio. Falling audience trust and lower partnership value.
Authority is limited to analysis or planning, or evidence is contradictory Deliver a read-only plan and approval checklist; pause the affected recommendation and request the source. Unauthorised publication or advice built on an unresolved premise.

Quality Standards

  • Client type acknowledged and applied: the client-type guidance is reflected in platform priorities, content mix, and tone — not a generic default.
  • Brand DNA verified: all three strands (Prolific, Passionate, Profitable) are confirmed before the BPS is written; Sheahan's Wall is addressed in platform and topic recommendations.
  • BPS produced and DCPR test passed: one sentence using the correct structure, specific to this individual's type, audience and market, and Distinctive, Consistent, Passonable and Relevant.
  • Three content pillars specific: each pillar is narrow enough for the individual to be introduced as Uganda's or East Africa's leading voice on that topic.
  • VCP sequence respected: Visibility and Credibility tactics are recommended before Profitability tactics (Misner's VCP Process, cited via Brown, 2016).
  • Reputation audit run for executive, consultant and founder clients, with the four-lever plan and one authority route.
  • No unsourced statistic about the return on speaking, posting or media appears; monetisation applies Craft before Scale and authority tactics name specific Ugandan/EA outlets and events.
  • Measurement table has 6-month targets and a review cadence; British English throughout, east-african-english tone applied, and release blocked on an F from ai-marketing/ai-slop-audit.

Anti-Patterns

  • Vague bios ("experienced professional", "award-winning artist"). Fix: use Portrait View with names and numbers the person has confirmed.
  • Generic pillars such as "Digital marketing", "Finance" or "Leadership". Fix: narrow each to a market and problem, for example "SME lending and credit access in Uganda's formal banking sector".
  • Relying on willpower for consistency. Fix: set a weekly floor, batch two weeks in a 90-minute monthly session and review the top and bottom three posts monthly.
  • Using WhatsApp Status for sales messages. Fix: post one or two single-idea professional insights a week.
  • Offering journalists a general willingness to comment. Fix: pitch a specific, data-backed angle, counterintuitive finding or timely hook.
  • Putting prices in the press kit or one-sheet. Fix: follow the price-free press kit in the brand partnership guide.
  • Posting on the person's accounts or publishing unverified credentials. Fix: stop at an approval-ready draft.
