About this skill

Medical Writing Specialization

This skill provides specialized guidance for the writing characteristics of papers in medicine, biology, and clinical research.

I. Characteristics of Medical Papers

Differences from Other Disciplines

Aspect Medical Papers General Science and Engineering
Structure Strict IMRAD + reporting guidelines IMRAD
Ethics Ethics approval must be stated As the case may be
Statistics Detailed statistical methods required Basic statistics
Reporting Specific reporting guidelines must be followed No mandatory requirement
Registration Clinical trials require preregistration No requirement

Common Types of Medical Papers

  • Randomized controlled trial (RCT): drug/treatment efficacy evaluation
  • Cohort study: long-term follow-up observation
  • Case-control study: retrospective analysis
  • Cross-sectional study: survey at a certain time point
  • Systematic review/Meta-analysis: comprehensive analysis of literature
  • Case report: description of rare cases

II. Reporting Guidelines

Study Type Reporting Guideline Core Requirements
Randomized controlled trial CONSORT Flow diagram, randomization method, blinding, ITT analysis
Observational study STROBE Study design, participants, variables, bias
Systematic review PRISMA Search strategy, screening process, quality assessment
Diagnostic accuracy STARD Reference standard, blinding, 2×2 table
Case report CARE Timeline, diagnostic reasoning, follow-up
Animal study ARRIVE Sample size, randomization, blinding

III. Medical Writing Standards

Ethics Statement

Required content:

本研究经[医院名称]伦理委员会批准(批准号:XXX-XXX-XXX),
所有参与者均签署知情同意书。本研究遵循《赫尔辛基宣言》原则。

Clinical trial registration:

本试验已在中国临床试验注册中心注册(注册号:ChiCTR-XXX-XXXXXXXX)。

Description of Statistical Methods

Standard template:

统计分析使用SPSS 26.0(IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA)进行。
计量资料以均数±标准差(x̄±s)表示,组间比较采用独立样本t检验;
计数资料以例数(百分比)表示,组间比较采用χ²检验。
P<0.05为差异有统计学意义。

Results Reporting Format

Continuous variables:

  • Normal distribution: mean ± standard deviation, e.g., 45.3±12.7岁
  • Non-normal distribution: median (interquartile range), e.g., 23.5(15.2-38.7)

Categorical variables:

  • Number of cases (percentage), e.g., 156例(62.4%)

Statistical test results:

  • t-test:t=2.45, P=0.016
  • Chi-square test:χ²=8.32, P=0.004
  • Regression analysis:OR=2.35, 95%CI: 1.42-3.89, P=0.001

Table Standards

Example of a baseline characteristics table:

Characteristic Trial group (n=50) Control group (n=50) P value
Age (years) 45.3±12.7 44.8±11.9 0.842
Male, n(%) 28(56.0) 25(50.0) 0.548
BMI(kg/m²) 24.2±3.1 23.8±2.9 0.498

IV. Medical Terminology Standards

P Value Reporting

  • P<0.001: write directly as P<0.001
  • 0.001≤P<0.05: write the exact value, e.g., P=0.023
  • P≥0.05: write the exact value, e.g., P=0.156
  • Avoid writing P=0.000, should write P<0.001

Number Standards

  • Keep a consistent number of decimal places
  • Percentages retain 1 decimal place
  • P values retain 3 decimal places
  • Confidence intervals retain 2 decimal places

V. Medical Paper Checklist

Ethics and Registration

  • Ethics approval number is stated
  • Informed consent is explained
  • Clinical trial is registered (if applicable)
  • Conflicts of interest are declared

Reporting Guidelines

  • The correct reporting guideline has been selected
  • The corresponding Checklist has been completed
  • A flow diagram is included (if needed)

Statistical Methods

  • Statistical software is stated
  • Statistical methods match the data type
  • Sample size calculation is explained

Presentation of Results

  • Effect size + confidence interval
  • P value format is correct
  • Table format is standardized
