About this skill

Career transition strategist (career-transition)

A job change is not an emotion but a project. A job change that starts from the emotion "I hate my current company" leads to repeated job changes. This skill reframes a job change as a 4-stage project: current-state analysis → goal setting → market research → plan execution, and leaves deliverables at each stage.

8 Core Principles

  1. A job change is not an emotion but a project — Handle it in 4 stages: current-state analysis → goal setting → market research → plan execution.
  2. Changing jobs (company) and changing careers (role) are different questions — First separately diagnose whether the root of your dissatisfaction is organizational culture or role fit.
  3. A career is not a reset but an extension — Gradual transitions, one step at a time, have a higher success rate than a 180-degree change.
  4. Judge timing by signals — "There's nothing new to write on my resume" is the strongest signal for deciding.
  5. A job change without self-analysis leads to repeated job changes — If you cannot answer why you are moving, the same dissatisfaction will recur wherever you go.
  6. Salary negotiation is a formal stage, not haggling — It is an official part of the hiring process, and it is rare to be rejected just for negotiating.
  7. Resignation and handover are the beginning of your next reputation — Your offboarding attitude carries into references and industry reputation.
  8. Always being visible with your resume is the operating premise of the headhunter system — Opportunities come only when you are always visible to platforms and headhunters.

Workflow: STEP 0–8

STEP 0. Timing diagnosis

Among the following 4 signals, 2 or moremeans it is time to seriously consider a job change.

  • Calmness: You are excessively calm, with neither challenge nor anxiety.
  • Lack of interest: Learning and interest have disappeared from your work.
  • Stagnant time required: The time needed for the same work no longer decreases (growth stagnation).
  • Resume stagnation: There has been no new achievement to add to your resume for 6 months.

STEP 1. Current-state analysis (3 areas)

  • Industry: What is the growth/decline direction of the industry I belong to?
  • Company: Is there any growth path left for me within the company?
  • Personal capabilities: What are my 3 core capabilities that sell in the market?

STEP 2. Goal setting

  • Refer to the paths of seniors who went ahead, and envision your destination 3–5 years from now.
  • Accumulate selection criteria by eliminating "what you won't do / can't do" through the process of elimination.

STEP 3. Market Research

  1. Target roleis selected first.
  2. Industry × Role mix to broaden the candidate pool (even for the same role, changing the industry means a different opportunity).
  3. Probability of passing × Willingness to apply Prioritize using a 2×2 matrix.
High willingness to apply Low willingness to apply
High probability of passing Focus applications on first priority Keep on standby as a backup
Low probability of passing Close the gap and take on the challenge Lower priority/on hold

STEP 4. Closing the Gap

Narrow the gap between your goal and your current capabilities — leverage certifications, side projects, and internal moves (internal transfers).

STEP 5. Documents & Career Narrative

  • Work category → Flow → Achievements Structure your career description using this structure (do not list tasks).
  • Express achievements as quantified + sense of scale. Example: "Contributed 30% of sales among 1,000 clients."
  • At the very top, place a 3-line summary.
  • When changing roles, use storytelling to connectyour previous experience with the target role.
  • Describe your reason for changing jobs as a fact-based perspective shift(not a list of complaints, but a statement of aspirations).

STEP 6. Interview

  • Prepare anticipated questions by condensing them into motivation / competencies / disposition three keywords.
  • Prepare answers in advance by extracting company- and role-specific questions in the style of past exam questions.
  • Applicants should also reverse-evaluatethe company (team atmosphere, growth environment, leadership).

STEP 7. Salary Negotiation

  • Conduct market rate research first, and set an acceptable band (lower to upper limit) in advance.
  • Avoid being the first to present a number, and guide the company to state their band first.
  • Prove your demands with performance numbers.
  • The first offer is a starting point— do not accept it as is.
  • Negotiate not just salary but the entire package(signing bonus, stock, job title, remote work, education budget) together.
  • Leverage differs by company size (large companies = rigid rules, startups = flexible). The negotiation period is usually from a few days to two weeks.

STEP 8. Offboarding

  • Notify your direct supervisor first (do not notify HR first).
  • Severance pay and unused leave settlement, Four major insurance transitionCheck — settlement items, unemployment benefits (job-seeking benefits) eligibility requirements, and the Employment24 application route are references/kr-resignation-benefits.md see.
  • If you are considering unemployment benefits, the reason-for-separation code and separation verification formshould be secured before leaving the company (voluntary resignation is in principle ineligible, and exceptions require documentation).
  • Write the handover document with 3 elements: ① intention-outcome gaps / ② what to keep and what to change / ③ unexpected problems.

Checklist

  • Did you separately diagnose whether this is a job change or a career change and the root of your dissatisfaction
  • Did you confirm at least 2 of the 4 timing signals
  • Did you define 3 core competencies in market language
  • Did you prioritize using the probability-of-success × application-intent matrix
  • Did you restructure your career description into category → flow → results
  • Did you express results with quantification + sense of scale (top 3-line summary)
  • Did you research the market rate and set a salary band in advance
  • Did you treat the first offer as a starting point and negotiate the whole package
  • Did you notify your direct manager first and write the handover document 3 elements
  • Did you check severance pay, annual leave settlement, unemployment benefit eligibility requirements, and the separation verification form (references/kr-resignation-benefits.md)

8 common mistakes

  1. Deciding to change jobs emotionally (leaving because "I hate it").
  2. Failing to distinguish organizational culture issues from job-fit issues.
  3. Submitting a career description that only lists tasks.
  4. Presenting a number first in salary negotiation.
  5. Giving up negotiation entirely for fear of "looking snobbish."
  6. Attempting a 180-degree transition that ignores your career.
  7. Ending handover by just throwing over documents.
  8. Notifying HR first about resignation (so the manager finds out later).

Korean culture notes

  • Because negotiation is viewed as "snobbish," there is a tendency to give up one's rights, but rejection solely because of negotiation is rare.
  • Because of a culture of modesty, there is a tendency to understate achievements, so you must consciously raise quantification.
  • The question about the reason for changing jobs is often used as a personality assessment toolrather than a practical-skills measure — perspective-shifting answers are advantageous.
  • Demand for counseling on job-change anxiety is especially high for 2-mal 3-cho (late 20s to early 30s).
  • Because offboarding is not standardized, you must personally take care of severance pay, annual leave, and the four major insurance transitions.
  • Constant exposure to platforms and headhunters is effectively the standard strategy.
