Task-Specific Questions
- What platform are you building on (or considering)?
- What stage is the community at? (Pre-launch, early, growing, established)
- What's the primary business goal? (Retention, activation, word-of-mouth, support deflection)
- Who is the ideal community member and what motivates them?
- Do you have existing users or customers to seed from?
- How much time can you dedicate to community management weekly?
Gotchas
- Building a community before having a core audience: A community of 10 members creates no flywheel. Before launching, have a minimum of 50-100 engaged customers or users who can seed the community with genuine activity.
- Letting the community become a support channel by default: If the loudest voices in a community are people with problems, the community turns into a complaint forum. Actively seed success stories, tips, and positive use cases to balance the tone.
- No moderation strategy: An unmoderated community degrades quickly. Define platform rules, assign a community manager (even part-time), and establish what gets removed before launch.
