Implicit Assumption Identification Method

R — Original Text (Reading)

"To overturn a conclusion, do not start from the conclusion, but from its implicit assumptions. If the foundational implicit assumption does not hold, the conclusion naturally does not hold. This is also a common method of master debaters: cut in from the cornerstone and structure, not from the content."

— Li Shanyou, Chapter 1

I — Methodological Skeleton (Interpretation)

Every conclusion is built on an implicit major premise. The reason implicit assumptions are dangerous is precisely because they are "implicit"—people inside the system cannot see them, just as a fish does not know it is in water.

The core logic chain of the identification method:

  1. Every inference has premises (major premise → minor premise → conclusion)
  2. How is the premise itself proven? If it comes from induction, then it is merely a "continuity assumption"
  3. The continuity assumption is not truth; it is an "arbitrary assertion assumed correct by default"
  4. The most common types of implicit assumptions: temporal continuity (future = past), spatial consistency (here = there), group consensus (everyone does it this way = it is right)

The moment an implicit assumption is discovered, breaking it has already begun (like meditation).

A1 — Application in the Book (Past Application)

Case 1: The implicit assumption of induction

  • Problem: 99% of human knowledge is built on induction, but induction may fail
  • Use of the method: Trace the major premise of induction—discover the continuity assumption that "the future is the same as the past," and the continuity assumption itself cannot be proven by induction
  • Conclusion: Induction can only falsify, not prove; all knowledge based on experience has boundaries
  • Result: Provided an epistemological basis for understanding "why experience fails in a new era"

Case 2: The implicit assumptions of the computer industry

  • Problem: Why Univac/IBM/DEC were each surpassed in different periods
  • Use of the method: Each company had its implicit assumptions (for scientific research → for enterprises → for commercial use → for home use); these assumptions were a source of strength for a period, and became a prison when crossing boundaries
  • Conclusion: Implicit assumptions are both the energy of a system and its "black hole"

A2 — Trigger Scenarios (Future Trigger) ★

In what situations will the user need this skill?

  1. Repeatedly agonizing over a decision but unable to find where the problem is
  2. Team discussion reaches a deadlock; all sides have a point but no consensus can be reached
  3. Experience/data point in one direction, but intuition feels something is wrong
  4. Wanting to challenge industry consensus but not knowing where to start

Language signals

  • "Why should it succeed by all reasoning, yet it failed"
  • "I feel something is off but I cannot say what"
  • "Everyone does it this way, but I always feel something is wrong"
  • "What is the premise of this conclusion"
  • "How can one break out of one's own thinking framework?"

Distinction from adjacent skills

  • Difference from boundary-innovation : Identifying implicit assumptions is a "diagnostic tool" (finding where the problem is), while boundary-breaking innovation is a "treatment plan" (how to break and rebuild). The former is a prerequisite step for the latter.
  • Difference from critical-thinking : Identifying implicit assumptions is a specific technique (tracing premises), while critical thinking is an overall attitude (universal doubt + falsifiability).

E — Executable Steps (Execution)

  1. Write out the complete reasoning chain of the current conclusion/decision

    • Completion criterion: Clearly list the syllogistic structure of "major premise → minor premise → conclusion"
    • Method: Write out the reasoning chain in the format of "because A, therefore B"
  2. For each premise, ask "how was this premise itself proven?"

    • Completion criterion: Identify at least one premise that is "assumed correct by default but actually lacks independent evidence"
    • Method: Continuously ask "why" for at least 3 levels (what Musk calls the "chain of why")
  3. Determine the type and strength of the implicit assumption

    • Completion criterion: Classify it as one of temporal continuity/spatial consistency/group consensus, and assess whether it still holds in the current context
    • Stopping condition: If all premises are supported by evidence independent of induction, the reasoning chain is reliable

B — Boundary (Boundary) ★

Do not use this skill in the following situations

  • Urgent everyday small matters — not every decision requires tracing premises
  • Reasoning already supported by sufficient empirical data — at this point the premises have been verified
  • Purely emotional/value-based issues — the "implicit assumption" framework does not apply to beliefs/preferences

Failure modes the author warns about in the book

  • Being inside the system makes it impossible to see implicit assumptions — this is the most fundamental difficulty, and the author admits that "philosophical thinking" is needed to break out
  • Even if an implicit assumption is identified, breaking it is extremely difficult — because it is often bound to group beliefs
  • A structural flaw in human cognition: the sensory system distorts truth, seeking survival rather than truth

The author's blind spots

  • "How to break out of the system and see implicit assumptions" is the hardest part of the entire methodology, but the author's answer is "philosophical thinking is needed" — this is not actionable guidance
  • The continuity assumption holds in most cases (the sun will indeed rise tomorrow), and excessive doubt about continuity may lead to decision paralysis
