About this skill

Hard-surface modeling

Inspect the scene, units, capability details, and supplied dimensions before mutation. Preserve separate functional parts and an editable modifier order. Prefer Mirror/Array for repetition, Boolean for openings, Bevel for manufactured edges, Solidify for sheet thickness, and Subdivision only when the intended silhouette needs it.

Use recipe.hard_surface_shell or recipe.spear when its declared output matches the task. Otherwise combine registered object, mesh, modifier, curve, and collection commands. Never use expert Python to claim missing hard-surface coverage.

After topology changes, discard old mesh selections and query a new topology version. Inspect designated solids with mesh.inspect; explicitly set allowOpenSurface only for intentionally open surfaces. Check dimensions, modifier order, helper visibility, normals, degenerate geometry, and whether requested parts remain independently editable. L2 recipe output is not L3 until a saved, reopened, visually reviewed and reimported deliverable passes.

If a required asset, exact dimension, unsupported modifier parameter, or extension is missing, report it. Only invent a proxy when the task already authorizes original design, and list that proxy in delivery.

When to Use

Use when creating products, mechanical parts, props, housings, openings, and editable repeated structures; switch to the surface sculpting skill when organic sculpting is needed.

Inputs and Prerequisites

  • Clarify units, key dimensions, tolerances, functional part separation, symmetry/array rules, and reference material authorization.
  • Record allowed modifiers, open surface intent, and parts that must remain independently editable.

Workflow

Step 1. Check proportions and naming, and separate objects and collections by function. Step 2. Complete the main outline first, then add Mirror, Array, Boolean, Bevel, Solidify as intended. Step 3. Keep the modifier order explainable, and re-query selections and versions after topology changes. Step 4. Check dimensions, normals, degenerate geometry, helper visibility, and independent editability. Step 5. Save, reopen, and review manufacturing edges and outlines from the delivery camera.

Validation and Delivery Evidence

Submit actual dimensions, object/collection list, modifier order, mesh.inspect results, open surface declarations, previews, and reopen evidence.

Rules and Capability Boundaries (Inapplicable Scenarios)

Do not pass off expert Python as a missing capability, do not download unauthorized assets, and do not treat passing a simple fixture as validation of all formats or production manufacturing.

Gotchas (Common Issues and Recovery)

  • Boolean broken faces: check applied scale, intersecting bodies, and the solver; do not stack repeated Booleans.
  • Uneven Bevel: handle object scale and normals first.
  • Dimension drift: return to parameters and the reference plane; do not use visual scaling instead of precise values.
