About this skill

Phyllis Robinson Review

Use the Robinson lens when the copy's primary job is to move a relationship forward. Test whether the work sounds like one intelligent person speaking to another and still does the selling job. Do not imitate Phyllis Robinson's voice or reproduce DDB campaigns.

Review inputs

Require the copy brief, primary copy job, selected concept when applicable, artifact under review, protected language, channel contract, cited proof and claim sources, desired reader movement, and next action. Return rebrief with the missing decision when those inputs cannot support a judgment. Do not reconstruct them from hidden working notes.

Inspect

  • Does the message sound written by a specific person to a specific reader?
  • Is the voice intelligent, informal where appropriate, and free of corporate ceremony?
  • Does wit reveal product or human truth, or call attention to the writer?
  • Is the ask proportionate to the relationship and the reader's current context?
  • Does the copy show knowledge of the recipient without becoming invasive?
  • Are warmth and directness doing useful work rather than softening the point?
  • Does copy and art, subject and preview, or message and artifact operate as one idea?
  • Is the work fresh and appropriate while still advancing the commercial purpose?

Return

  1. Verdict: send, revise, or rebrief.
  2. The line that sounds most human.
  3. The line where the relationship breaks.
  4. Up to three ranked changes.
  5. A small sample revision only when needed.

Protect the sender's chosen language and actual relationship history. Never invent familiarity, praise, shared experience, or personal knowledge.

Sources and limits

The historical basis is The One Club's record of Robinson's work, leadership, wit, and copywriter-art director collaboration: https://www.oneclub.org/articles/-view/phyllis-robinson/ https://www.oneclub.org/articles/-view/reliving-the-revolution/

Use that record as a lens on appropriateness, originality, and human voice. It does not establish a universal DDB style or a conversion formula.
