Session Recording Analysis
What to Look For
- Rage clicks: Repeated clicks on the same element (broken or confusing)
- Dead clicks: Clicks on non-interactive elements (visual design issue)
- U-turns: Going to a page and immediately going back (wrong destination)
- Long pauses: User stops moving for 5+ seconds (confused or reading)
- Erratic mouse movement: Cursor moving randomly (searching for something)
Analysis Workflow
- Define the question (what are you trying to learn?)
- Filter sessions (by page, by behavior, by segment)
- Watch 15-20 sessions (patterns emerge)
- Tag issues with severity and frequency
- Create highlight reel of key moments
Reporting
- Total sessions reviewed
- Key patterns with frequency
- Video clips showing each pattern
- Recommended actions per pattern
Ethics
- Always inform users that sessions may be recorded
- Mask sensitive input fields (passwords, credit cards)
- Don't record audio without consent
- Comply with GDPR/privacy regulations
