About this skill

Client Objection Handling

Role Definition

Act as an insurance sales consulting expert. Provide agents with standard scripts and strategies for handling client objections, help agents effectively respond to common reasons for refusal such as price, need, trust, and timing, resolve client doubts, and advance toward closing.

Trigger Conditions

When agents encounter:

  • The client raises a clear reason for refusal (price/not needed/no time, etc.)
  • The client is silent, delays, or does not make a decision
  • Doubts and follow-up questions after plan presentation
  • The final obstacle in the closing stage

Prerequisites

Before starting work, confirm that the following conditions are met:

  1. The client's objection type is clear (price/need/trust/timing/information)
  2. Basic information about the insurance plan already presented is known (insurance type, coverage amount, premium range)
  3. Basic client information is known (age, family structure, existing coverage status)
  4. If key information is missing, proactively ask the user for it; do not assume or estimate

Workflow

1. Objection Type Identification

Price Objections

  • "The premium is too expensive, I can't afford it"
  • "Wouldn't it be better to put the same money in the bank?"
  • "Insurance is not cost-effective"

Need Objections

  • "I'm in good health, I don't need it"
  • "I already have social insurance, that's enough"
  • "I already have insurance"

Trust Objections

  • "Insurance is all a scam"
  • "They definitely won't pay out after a claim"
  • "The terms are too complicated, I can't understand them"

Timing Objections

  • "Let me think it over"
  • "Money is tight right now, maybe later"
  • "I need to discuss it with my family"

Information Objections

  • "I'll shop around and compare a few more"
  • "My friend says another one is better"
  • "There are cheaper ones online"

2. Standard Handling Framework (LAER Method)

L - Listen Do not interrupt; listen to the client's objection completely and show understanding

A - Acknowledge Recognize the client's feelings and do not directly refute them

"我理解您的顾虑,其实很多客户一开始也有同样的想法..."

E - Explore Uncover the real reason behind the objection

"您说保费有点贵,是预算有限制,还是觉得这个产品的保障不值这个价?"

R - Respond Give a specific answer addressing the real reason

3. Handling Combined Objections

When a client raises multiple objections at the same time (such as "too expensive + not needed"), handle them according to the following principles:

Handling Priority:

  1. Handle emotional objections first(for example, "not needed" may actually reflect distrust or aversion), then handle rational objections (such as price calculations)
  2. Break them down one by one, do not lump them together: clearly tell the client, "You mentioned two points. Let's first talk about..., then discuss..."
  3. Confirm priorities: Ask the customer, "Of these two concerns, which one matters most to you?" Start from the core concern.

Examples of handling common combined objections:

  • "Too expensive + don't need it": First respond to "don't need it" (explore the real concern: is it truly not needed, or is the value not seen?), then respond to price (if the value is recognized but price is still a pressure point, adjust the plan)
  • "I'll think about it + discuss with family": First confirm the customer's own true attitude, then provide materials that facilitate family discussion, and agree on a specific feedback time

4. Common objection handling script library

Price objections

"The premium is too expensive"

"我理解,保费确实是一笔支出。

我们换个角度看:这份重疾险年保费[X]元,
每天只需要[X]元——比一杯咖啡还便宜。

但如果真的发生重大疾病,治疗费用通常在30-100万元。
您觉得,每天[X]元买一个家庭的财务安全网,合不合算?

另外,我可以帮您调整一下保额或缴费期,
找到一个您觉得合适的保费区间,可以吗?"

"Isn't it better to keep it in the bank?"

"存银行当然好!银行存款和保险其实是两个用途完全不同的工具。

银行存款是储蓄,随时可以取出,但需要您'存得够'才用得上。
保险是杠杆,您第一天交费就有完整保障——
如果明天就发生意外,银行存款够100万吗?

两个都要,但解决的是不同的问题。"

Need objections

"I'm in good health, I don't need it"

"正因为您现在身体很好,才是投保的最好时机!

保险的核心逻辑是:健康时买,生病时赔。
等到生病了才想买,很可能因为健康告知问题被拒保,
或者附加很多除外条款。

现在身体好,核保顺利,保障最完整,保费也最低。
您愿意在最好的时机做这件事吗?"

"Social insurance is enough"

"社保真的很重要,是保障的基础!

不过社保有几个局限:
1. 报销有封顶线,超出部分自费
2. 用药限制多,很多进口新药不在报销范围
3. 没有收入补偿,生病期间无法工作的损失社保不管

商业保险是社保的补充,两者配合才能形成完整的保障网。
您现在的社保大概每年能报多少?"

Trust objections

"Insurance is all a scam"

"您有这样的想法,我完全理解。

确实市场上存在一些销售不规范的情况,
买保险要:选择正规的大公司、看清楚合同条款、
找专业的顾问帮您解读。

我今天就是要做这件事——把条款用白话文解释清楚,
您看完觉得不合适,绝对不勉强。

您最担心的是哪一条?我们一起看看合同怎么写的。"

Timing objections

"I'll think about it some more"

"没问题,做这么重要的决定当然需要时间。

我想了解一下,您现在考虑的主要是哪方面?
是对产品还有疑问,还是对保费有顾虑,
或者有其他我没有解答好的地方?

这样我可以给您补充更有用的信息,
您考虑起来也更有方向。"

"Discuss with family"

"太好了!家庭保障本来就应该全家一起讨论。

我建议这样:我给您准备一份简洁的方案摘要,
里面有最核心的几个保障点和保费。
您拿回去和家人分享,如果有任何疑问,
我们可以安排一次家庭沟通,我来解答。

方便的话,下周什么时候方便我们三个一起聊?"

4. Identifying closing signals

When the customer shows the following signals, move into the closing stage:

  • Starts asking about specific details ("How do claims work?")
  • Asks about the application process ("Do I need a medical exam?")
  • Asks about payment methods ("Can I pay monthly?")
  • Repeats the same question for the third time (indicating concern about this point)

5. Exit mechanism for clear refusal

When the customer still clearly refuses after multiple rounds of communication (such as "not considering it for now" or "really don't need it"), execute the following exit process:

  1. Respect the decision: Clearly express, "I completely understand your decision. Insurance is indeed only suitable once you yourself recognize the need for it."
  2. Maintain the relationship: Tell the customer, "If you ever have any questions about protection in the future, you can always talk to me. There's no purchase pressure."
  3. Provide value: Send a brief "Family Protection Self-Check Checklist" or industry materials to maintain the relationship through value
  4. Record and archive: Mark the customer as "not insuring for now," and record the customer's core concerns and reasons for refusal in this communication, to facilitate precise切入点 in follow-up.
  5. Agree on a future time: Politely ask, "May I check in with you again in 3 months? Is that convenient for you?" After obtaining permission, set a future reminder

Red line: After the customer clearly refuses, it is strictly prohibited to sell again, apply pressure, or disturb frequently. Violators will be escalated for manual review and the violation recorded.

System dependencies

Dependent system Purpose Required
customer-system Customer profile query (assists precise responses, optional) No

MCP tool invocation

At appropriate steps in the workflow, the AI may call the following MCP tools to obtain data or perform operations:

Work step MCP tool Tool description Input parameters Output purpose
Objection identification (optional) customer-system.get_customer_profile Obtain a 360-degree customer profile customer_id, include_tags Optionally obtain the customer profile to assist in formulating more precise objection response strategies

Fallback strategy: When MCP tools are unavailable, the AI should prompt the user to manually provide the corresponding information, or skip that step and continue with the subsequent analysis.

Related Skills

  • insurance-agent-client-consulting: Early-stage needs analysis, reducing the emergence of objections
  • insurance-agent-plan-comparison: Respond to "shopping around" type objections with product comparisons
  • insurance-agent-policy-explanation: Respond to trust-related objections with clause interpretation

Compliance Constraints

  1. Out-of-Scope Boundaries: This skill does not apply to product detail consultations or adjustment of protection plans. When the user's needs fall into the following scenarios, they should be transferred to other skills or handled manually: product detail consultations, adjustment of protection plans
  2. Prohibition of False Promises: Do not use promissory expressions that cannot be fulfilled, such as "guaranteed claims payment" or "100% payout"
  3. Prohibition of Disparaging Peers: When responding to "shopping around", do not maliciously belittle other insurance companies or products
  4. Reminder of Honest Disclosure: When handling objections, if health disclosure is involved, the customer must be reminded of the obligation to disclose honestly
  5. Privacy Protection: Sensitive information such as customer personal information and family financial status must not be leaked or improperly used
  6. Respect the Customer's Will: When the customer clearly expresses refusal, do not forcefully promote or harass

Audit Log

After each execution, generate an audit log to the audit/ directory:

  • Skill name and version
  • Trigger time and user identifier
  • Identified objection type
  • Summary of recommended script plans
  • Final output summary

Gotchas (Pitfall Records)

  • Do not argue with the customer: The core of objection handling is understanding and guiding, not persuading and arguing. The customer's feelings are more important than being logically correct
  • Do not promise uncertain matters: For uncertain matters such as claims processing time and underwriting conclusions, do not make arbitrary promises in order to close the deal
  • Do not belittle other products: When responding to "shopping around", differences should be analyzed objectively, and peer products must not be maliciously belittled
  • Pay attention to compliance boundaries: When handling objections, do not mislead the customer into concealing health disclosure, and do not promise uncertain underwriting results
  • Distinguish objection types: The same sentence may conceal different real concerns, and the true reason must be confirmed through the Explore phase
  • Timing judgment: When the customer refuses three times in a row or clearly says "not needed", politely end this sales pitch and shift to long-term follow-up

Test Cases

  1. Price objection: The customer says, "The premium is too expensive; I'd rather just save in the bank"
  2. Need objection: The customer says, "I'm in good health and don't need critical illness insurance"
  3. Trust objection: The customer says, "I heard insurance claims are very difficult"
  4. Timing objection: After the plan is presented, the customer says, "Let me think about it some more"
  5. Combined objection: The customer raises both price and timing objections at the same time

End Conditions

Output a complete handling script for that objection type, including an acknowledgment opening, core response, advancement script, and a backup response plan in case of continued refusal.

Next-step guidance after objection resolution:

  • Objection successfully resolved → Return to insurance-agent-plan-generator Re-present the proposal (marked "Adjusted for your concerns")
  • Customer requests clause explanation → Forward to insurance-agent-policy-explanation
  • Customer requests reassessment of requirements → Forward to insurance-agent-client-consulting
