What is SimpleAR
SimpleAR is a pure autoregressive model jointly launched by the Visual and Learning Laboratory of Fudan University and the ByteDance Seed Teamimage generationmodel. It adopts a concise autoregressive architecture and achieves high-quality image generation by optimizing the training and inference process. SimpleAR can generate 1024×1024 resolution images with only 500 million parameters, achieving excellent results on benchmarks such as GenEval. Training adopts a three-stage method of "pre-training – supervised fine-tuning – reinforcement learning", significantly improving text-following ability and generation quality. SimpleAR is compatible with existing acceleration technologies, and inference time can be shortened to within 14 seconds.
Main features of SimpleAR
- High-quality text-to-image generation: SimpleAR is a pure autoregressive visual generation framework. With only 500 million parameters, it can generate high-quality 1024×1024 resolution images, achieving an excellent score of 0.59 on benchmarks such as GenEval.
- Multimodal fusion generation: It treats text and visual tokens equally and integrates them into a unified Transformer architecture, supporting multimodal modeling and enabling better text-guided image generation.
Technical principles of SimpleAR
- Autoregressive generation mechanism: SimpleAR adopts the classic autoregressive generation approach, gradually generating image content through "next token prediction". This mechanism decomposes an image into a series of discrete tokens and then predicts these tokens one by one, thereby constructing the complete image.
- Multimodal fusion: SimpleAR integrates text encoding and visual generation into a decoder-only Transformer architecture. It improves parameter utilization efficiency and better supports joint modeling between text and visual modalities, enabling the model to more naturally understand and generate images corresponding to text descriptions.
- Three-stage training method:
- Pre-training: Through large-scale data pre-training, it learns general visual and language patterns.
- Supervised fine-tuning (SFT): On the basis of pre-training, supervised learning is used to further improve generation quality and instruction-following ability.
- Reinforcement learning (GRPO): Post-training is performed based on a simple reward function (such as CLIP) to optimize the aesthetics and multimodal alignment of generated content.
- Inference acceleration technology: SimpleAR optimizes the inference process through technologies such as vLLM, significantly shortening image generation time. For example, a model with 0.5B parameters can generate high-quality 1024×1024 resolution images within 14 seconds.
- Choice of visual tokenizer: SimpleAR uses Cosmos as the visual tokenizer, which has limitations in low-resolution images and detail reconstruction and still has room for improvement.
